Weekend Getaways from Nairobi: Eight Trips for a Day or a Night

The best weekend getaways from Nairobi are the ones you can actually book by Friday: a night camping on Ngong Hills for KES 2,500, a Hell's Gate and Lake Naivasha day from US$165, two days in Amboseli for US$308, or two days at Chania Falls in the Aberdare forest for KES 18,000. This list runs from the closest to the furthest, says how many nights each one really needs, and gives you one bookable experience per place. Day trips are in here too, because a Saturday out and a Sunday at home is a weekend getaway for most of us. Prices are per person and were checked on 2 November 2026.

1. Ngong Hills: camp a night on the ridge

Why go: It is the closest proper night outdoors to the city. The Ngong Hills Sunset Camping Escape gives you a reserved campsite, the camping equipment for the confirmed setup, an orientation and safety briefing, a guided nature walk, sunset and sunrise time and a hosted bonfire when the weather allows, for KES 2,500 per person. The plan runs from afternoon arrival to a next-morning checkout, with a short morning walk and a leave-no-trace clean-up before you go.

Go here instead of: a Ngong day hike, if you want the sunset and the stars. The trade-off is that meals, snacks, drinking water and transport to the hills are not included, and the bonfire can be cancelled in strong wind or high fire risk. A private group bonfire is KES 2,000 per group and overnight group security KES 4,000 per group, both charged once.

Best for: friends and families who want a cheap first night in a tent close to home. Not for anyone who needs catering laid on or a guaranteed fire.

Getting there: the camp is at Ngong. The host confirms the campsite pin and arrival time before you travel, so book 24 to 48 hours ahead.

Ngong Hills Sunset Camping Escape
Experience

Ngong Hills Sunset Camping Escape

Leave the city behind for a simple night outdoors on the cool, open slopes of Ngong Hills. Settle into camp, stretch your legs on a gentle nature walk and watch the ridge soften into sunset before gathering around the bonfire for stories and easy conversation. After a night beneath the stars, wake to fresh hill air and early light across the landscape. A relaxed morning walk and shared campsite clean-up close the experience before departure. It suits friends, families and small groups looking for unhurried time together in nature, with the final setup shaped by weather and group needs.

per person

Our tip: pack warm layers, a waterproof jacket, a torch and a charged power bank. The host's own packing list adds closed shoes and insect repellent.

2. Kereita Forest, Limuru: a zip-line Saturday

Why go: The Forest at Kereita runs a two-line Flying Fox tour of about 750 metres that takes around 45 minutes including the harness fitting and briefing, for KES 2,100 per person. A guided one-hour forest nature walk towards the caves, a waterfall or a viewpoint is KES 400. Public activities run Thursday to Sunday and on public holidays, with sessions from 9:00 and the last one starting at 16:00, so it fits a Saturday without planning leave.

Go here instead of: the Ngong zip line, if you want forest rather than open hills. The trade-off is weekend-only opening, a minimum height of 1.4 metres and a maximum weight of 115 kilograms on the zip, and no picnics; food is from the on-site restaurant. Transport to Kereita is not included.

Best for: mixed groups where some people want the zip and others want a walk and lunch. Not for very small children, because of the height rule.

Getting there: the venue is mapped at Limuru. Booking is required, and you should arrive at least 15 minutes before your session in trousers and closed shoes.

Book it: the zip tour and nature walk are on Visatile, and the neighbouring tea country has its own 90-minute guided walk in our Tigoni tea farm hike guide. Other zip lines and quad bikes near the city are compared in adventure activities near Nairobi.

Our tip: if your session is affected by weather the host will tell you, so keep your phone on the morning you go.

3. Naivasha: Hell's Gate, the lake and Crescent Island

Why go: One day covers the three things people drive to Naivasha for. The Hell's Gate, Lake Naivasha and Crescent Island day picks you up in Nairobi at about 7:00, stops at the Rift Valley viewpoint and reaches Hell's Gate at around 9:00 for roughly two hours of cycling among zebra, giraffe and antelope. After lunch a boat crosses the lake, past hippos and waterbirds, to Crescent Island for a guided walking safari. Park and island entry, the bicycle, the boat, the guide and Nairobi hotel pickup are included. It costs US$165 per person for four to six people, US$170 each for three, US$185 each for two and US$220 solo, and the group is capped at six.

Go here instead of: a Lake Nakuru day, if you would rather be on a bike and on foot than in a vehicle. The trade-off is that lunch and drinks are not included, airport or out-of-zone pickup adds US$30, and the host's written cancellation terms charge 5% more than 40 days out, rising to no refund inside five days.

Best for: people who want to move. Not for anyone who cannot manage two hours on a bicycle and a walk in the sun.

Getting there: KWS routes you along the A104 to Naivasha and then Moi South Lake Road; Elsa Gate is 25 km from the junction and the park's gates open 06:00 to 18:00. Entry for an East African citizen adult is KES 500 and for a non-resident adult US$50, already inside this day's price.

Hell’s Gate, Lake Naivasha & Crescent Island Day Experience
Experience

Hell’s Gate, Lake Naivasha & Crescent Island Day Experience

A full-day active escape from Nairobi combining cycling in Hell’s Gate National Park, a Lake Naivasha boat ride and a guided wildlife walk on Crescent Island. After a Great Rift Valley viewpoint stop, the experience reaches Hell’s Gate around 9:00 a.m. for approximately two hours of cycling among open landscapes where zebra, giraffe and antelope may be seen. After lunch at the traveler’s expense, a boat crosses Lake Naivasha—known for hippos and abundant birdlife—to Crescent Island for a walking safari among free-roaming plains animals. Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. The official website price captured 5 August 2026 starts at USD 165 per person for four to six travelers; the published tiers are USD 220 solo, USD 185 each for two, and USD 170 each for three. Public popularity snapshot: GetYourGuide 4.8/5 from 94 ratings and Tripadvisor’s operator page 5.0/5 from 136 reviews. Review themes repeatedly highlight the mix of cycling, boat travel and close wildlife viewing, as well as patient, friendly guides.

per person · 11 hours

Book it: the day above. To decide between cycling and walking the gorge, read Hell's Gate: cycling or walking, and for the lake-versus-park question see Lake Nakuru or Lake Naivasha. Going without a car? Use Nairobi to Naivasha without a car.

Our tip: stay the Saturday night and climb Mount Longonot on Sunday. A guided crater-rim hike is KES 8,500 per person for ages 12 to 70, meeting at the Longonot park entrance; the host confirms the time and exact pin after booking. The rim-or-full-circuit decision is in our Mount Longonot day hike guide.

4. Chania Falls and the Aberdare forest: two days in the highlands

Why go: This is the one place on the list without a Visatile guide yet, and the only cool-forest weekend here. The 2-Day Chania Falls and Aberdare Forest Escape is KES 18,000 per person for ages 10 to 70, with a group cap of 25, meeting at the Chania Falls Public Campsite on Aberdare Park Road. The host confirms the exact meeting point, start time, overnight arrangement, transport, meals and park or campsite fees after booking.

Go here instead of: Naivasha, if you have done the lake twice. The trade-off is that the price does not itemise what it covers, so ask us exactly what the KES 18,000 includes before you commit, and budget for park entry: KWS lists Aberdare at KES 800 for an East African citizen adult and US$70 for a non-resident adult.

Best for: walkers who like waterfalls, rivers and mist more than game drives. Not for anyone who needs a fixed itinerary in writing before paying.

Getting there: KWS puts the park 150 km from Nairobi, with tarmac access from Nyeri and Naro Moru on the eastern side; gates open 06:00 to 18:00 unless you are staying inside. KWS also tells you to bring warm clothing because temperatures drop fast at night, which matches the host's advice to pack waterproof footwear, warm layers and rain protection.

2-Day Chania Falls & Aberdare Forest Escape
Experience

2-Day Chania Falls & Aberdare Forest Escape

Spend two days in the cool Aberdare highlands around Chania Falls, where forest trails, river scenery and waterfall viewpoints create an easy reset from the city. The experience suits travellers looking for a short outdoor escape with time to slow down and enjoy the landscape. Vicking Ventures lists the two-day excursion at KES 18,000 per person. Bring waterproof footwear, warm layers and rain protection. The host confirms the exact overnight arrangement, transport, meals and park or campsite fees before the booking is accepted.

Book it: the two-day escape above.

Our tip: this is the trip to take in a dry month if you want the trails firm; in the rains the forest is wetter and colder, so the waterproofs stop being optional.

5. Lake Nakuru: a long day for rhinos

Why go: Lake Nakuru is Kenya's first rhino sanctuary and, per KWS, hosts about 450 bird species. The Lake Nakuru Wildlife Safari Day leaves Nairobi at about 05:30, stops at the Rift Valley viewpoint, and gives you a morning and an afternoon game drive with a driver-guide, the safari vehicle, bottled water and hotel pickup and return, for US$265 per person. It is a 12 to 13-hour day.

Go here instead of: Amboseli, if you cannot spare a night away. The trade-off is that park entry and lunch are extra: KWS charges KES 1,500 for an East African citizen adult and US$90 for a non-resident adult. Most viewing is from the vehicle, with only short stops at viewpoints.

Best for: wildlife-first travellers with one free day. Not for small children, because of the hours in the car.

Getting there: KWS puts the park 156 km north-west of Nairobi on the A104, with the Main Gate 4 km from Nakuru City. Bring photo ID and a way to pay the park fee at the gate.

Book it: the Nakuru day is on Visatile; compare it with the lake options in Lake Nakuru or Lake Naivasha, and if you want to get out of the car, where you can walk around the Rift Valley lakes explains the rules.

Our tip: rhino sightings are likely but never guaranteed, so bring binoculars and treat the birds as the sure thing.

6. Amboseli: two days with elephants under Kilimanjaro

Why go: Two chances at the mountain beat one. The Two Day Amboseli Elephant Safari is private, with a pop-roof safari vehicle, a driver-guide, an afternoon game drive on day one, a night in a private room at Nyati Safari Camp or the confirmed equivalent, the meals in the itinerary, bottled water and a morning game drive on day two before the drive back, for US$308 per person. Pickup is early, along Mombasa Road.

Go here instead of: a Nakuru day, if elephants and a clear Kilimanjaro are the point. The trade-off is that the Amboseli park fee is extra, KES 1,500 for an East African citizen adult or US$90 for a non-resident adult on the KWS rate card, the optional Maasai village visit costs more, and the mountain view depends entirely on cloud.

Best for: couples and small groups who want a private vehicle without a long safari. Not for anyone hoping for a day trip; see why in our Amboseli day-trip reality check.

Getting there: KWS gives two road routes: via Emali on the Nairobi to Mombasa road to Iremito Gate (204 km), or Nairobi to Namanga and Meshanani Gate (220 km), tarmac to Namanga and murram after it.

Two Day Amboseli Elephant Safari
Experience

Two Day Amboseli Elephant Safari

Leave Nairobi for an overnight safari in Amboseli, where elephants cross open plains and wetlands beneath Mount Kilimanjaro. An afternoon drive, a quiet camp evening and a fresh morning in the park give you two chances to catch the mountain clear and the wildlife active. Travel privately with a professional guide in a pop-roof safari vehicle. The planned room includes a bed, linen, private washroom, mosquito net, hot water and scheduled electricity, making this a compact adventure without giving up a comfortable night.

per person

Book it: the two-day safari above. If you can stretch to three or four days, Amboseli safaris of 2, 3 and 4 days compared shows what the extra nights buy.

Our tip: early morning is your best chance of the mountain, so get into the park as soon as the gate opens on day two.

7. Samburu by tent: a Visatile crew trip on 27 to 29 November

Why go: This is the one fixed-date trip on the list, and the only northern Kenya option. The Samburu camping trip leaves Nairobi on Friday 27 November 2026 and returns on Sunday 29 November, with transport, camping in an equipped campsite with tents on a sharing basis, half-board meals, a game drive in Buffalo Springs National Reserve, a Saturday hike up Mount Ololokwe and a swim in the Buffalo Springs natural pool. There are 20 places.

Go here instead of: Amboseli, if you want a group and a hike rather than a private vehicle. The trade-off is sharing a tent and travelling on the set dates.

Best for: solo travellers and friends who like a crew. Not for anyone who wants a lodge bed after a hike.

Getting there: road transport from Nairobi is part of the trip, so you only need to get to the pickup.

Trip

Samburu Camping trip; 2Days 1 Night

Pack your sense of adventure and leave the usual behind for a 2-day, 1-night Samburu camping escape that brings together wild landscapes, mountain views, and proper road-trip energy. Wake up to the thrill of Mt. Ololokwe, where the hike rewards you with sweeping northern Kenya scenery and that unbeatable “we made it” feeling. Then switch gears for a game drive through Buffalo Springs National Reserve, keeping your eyes open for wildlife against Samburu’s rugged, sun-kissed backdrop. There is also time to cool off at the natural Buffalo Springs and simply enjoy the freedom of being out in the wild. With campfire stories, fresh air, a fun crew, and a sky full of stars, this is the kind of short getaway that feels far bigger than a weekend.

Book it: the trip card above; the dates and price are on it. For the other ways to reach Samburu, including flying, read Samburu safari from Nairobi: four ways compared.

Our tip: Ololokwe is a real climb before a swim, so bring proper shoes and more water than you think you need.

8. Jamhuri weekend, 12 to 13 December: Mombasa by train or Nanyuki cottages

Why go: Jamhuri Day 2026 falls on a Saturday, so there is no free Monday, and the two fixed-date trips below are built for exactly that. The Mombasa Jamhuri Weekend Getaway runs 11 to 13 December with return SGR economy tickets from Nairobi, station transfers and two nights at Sun n Sand Beach Resort on half board; you arrive on the morning train, have a full free day, and take the night train back on the Sunday. The Nanyuki Jamhuri Holiday Escape is one night, 12 to 13 December, at Aberdare Prestige and Royal Cottages on the Nyeri to Nanyuki road, on full board, with no fixed activity schedule and 12 places.

Go here instead of: trying to book a coast hotel yourself on a holiday weekend. The trade-off is that activities are not included in Mombasa and transport is not included to Nanyuki.

Best for: Mombasa for friends who want sea and a train, Nanyuki for couples who want cool air and nothing scheduled.

Getting there: Mombasa: the train tickets are in the trip. Nanyuki: you drive or arrange your own transport to the cottages.

Book it: both trips are on Visatile; the dates and prices are on the trip cards, and the full set of December fixed-date trips is in where to go in Kenya this December. In Nanyuki, a day at Ol Pejeta is the obvious add-on; our Ol Pejeta guide has the costs.

Our tip: both trips cap at 12 people, so book before the December rush rather than during it.

How to use this list

Pick by nights first, then by how much you want to move. With one free day, Kereita, Naivasha and Nakuru are the honest options, and Naivasha is the one where you are not in a vehicle. With one night, Ngong is the cheapest and closest, Amboseli the best wildlife, and Chania the quietest. Two nights means Samburu on 27 November or Mombasa on the Jamhuri weekend. Park fees are the hidden cost: they are inside the Naivasha day and the Samburu trip, and outside everything else, so check the KWS rate for your category before you go.

More on Kenya: Hell's Gate: cycling or walking, Amboseli safaris of 2, 3 and 4 days compared, Samburu from Nairobi: four ways compared, Kenya park entry fees and where to go in Kenya this December.
