SF Duka Craft Cafe in Athi River: Every Workshop with Prices

The Craft Cafe by SF Duka runs nine bookable builds on Saturdays at its workshop on Mombasa Road in Athi River, from KES 1,800 per person for string art to KES 10,180 for a picnic table that folds into a briefcase, and you take every one of them home. Eight are three-hour sessions. The picnic table is a seven-hour full day. Children from 7 can join the string art, yarn art, textured canvas, cutting board and leso tray builds with an adult. The hot glue gun session, the anime light box and the partner portraits start at 12. Tools, materials and safety equipment are in every price. Transport is not, and meals are only included where you confirm them when you book.

Sessions run 10am to 5pm, in half-day or full-day blocks

SF Duka's own schedule on sfduka.com has two half-day slots: a morning session with a safety and tools briefing at 10:00 and building from 10:30 to 12:45, and an afternoon session with the briefing at 14:00 and building from 14:30 to 17:00. The full-day format starts with the same 10:00 briefing, builds until 13:00, breaks for lunch and games such as giant Jenga and cornhole from 13:00 to 14:00 (the site says vegan and non-vegan options are available), then builds again from 14:00 to 17:00. The site says the workshop opens every Friday or Saturday, and its footer says every Saturday; the sessions you can book with us are all Saturday sessions, so confirm your Saturday and your slot when you book. Arrive before the session time for check-in. The tool-safety briefing is mandatory, and every build includes access to SF Duka's games.

Under KES 2,500: string, yarn, texture and hot glue

Make Your Own String Art (KES 1,800) is the cheapest way in. You turn a word, your initials, a shape or a geometric pattern into string art on a solid wood block: map the design, hammer in the nails, then wrap your chosen string colours. It is done within one session and suits children from 7, with under-12s choosing a child-appropriate project and attending with an adult.

Make Your Own String Art

Turn your own idea—a word, initials, a shape or a geometric pattern—into display-ready string art on a solid wood block. Map the design, hammer in the nails and wrap your chosen string colours with patient, step-by-step guidance. Everything is tactile, approachable and complete within one Saturday session. No experience is needed, and you leave with a personalised finished piece.

Create Textured Canvas Art (KES 2,000) uses texture medium and simple tools to build a dimensional surface on canvas, then colour and finishing details in your own palette. No drawing or painting background is needed. Texture medium and paint can need extra drying time, so the facilitator explains how to carry it home; framing is not included. Create Yarn Art on Canvas (KES 2,100) works the same way with yarn: choose a pattern, an abstract idea or a personal design, plan the colours, then build texture across the canvas. It runs as a Saturday morning or afternoon session.

Hot Glue Gun 3D Embroidery (KES 2,400) is not thread embroidery. You trace a simple design in hot glue to make raised lines and texture, then paint and decorate it. Because the glue gun is heated and can burn, the minimum age is 12, under-18s come with an adult, and you follow the facilitator's safety instructions throughout.

Hot Glue Gun 3D Embroidery

Create a raised, embroidery-inspired artwork using a hot glue gun, colour and layered decorative details. Begin by choosing or sketching a simple design, trace its main lines with guided hot-glue techniques, then build texture and dimension before adding colour and finishing touches. This hands-on session is suitable for beginners and combines drawing, relief work and mixed-media craft in one display-ready piece. All materials, supervised tool use and protective equipment are provided. Hot glue can cause burns, so following the facilitator’s safety instructions is mandatory. You take your completed 3D artwork home; confirm the available Saturday session when booking.

Woodwork: a cutting board, a leso tray and a picnic table

Build a Solid-Wood Cutting Board (KES 4,400) is the beginner woodworking session: cut, shape and sand the board, then apply a food-safe finish. Wear closed shoes. Make a Leso-Inspired Wooden Tray (KES 4,750) adds a decorating stage: assemble the tray with guided tool use, pick one of the leso patterns available on the day, apply it, then sand and seal. If you want a particular colour or motif, contact SF Duka before booking, because a pattern that has not been reserved in advance is not guaranteed. Treat the tray as a serving and decor piece, and do not put unwrapped food straight on it unless SF Duka confirms the finish is food-safe.

Build a Foldable Suitcase Picnic Table (KES 10,180) is the big one: a seven-hour build of a low picnic table that folds into a wooden briefcase with integrated handles. You assemble the folding mechanism, make the slatted top, sand it and choose a natural-wood or dark-stain finish. Ask us whether lunch is in the ticket for the full day when you book.

The anime light box needs patience and a design you are allowed to use

Build a 3D Anime Light Box (KES 4,300) turns an anime-inspired scene into a layered, illuminated artwork: prepare the image layers, space them for depth, assemble the frame and fit the lighting element. Design choice depends on complexity, session time, materials and rights of use, so confirm a custom design with SF Duka before you attend; licensed artwork files are not supplied. Replacement batteries or a power adapter are not included unless expressly stated. Minimum age 12, with under-18s alongside an adult.

This guided mixed-media session combines illustration, precision craft and simple assembly in a display piece you can take home. Paint Your Partner is the one to book as a pair

Paint Your Partner (KES 2,800 per person, minimum two) has you sit opposite a partner, friend or relative and paint each other's portrait before a reveal. Canvas, paints, brushes and an apron are included, and it runs on Saturday mornings or afternoons from age 12. We cover it alongside other painting sessions in paint and sip in Nairobi and in date ideas in Nairobi beyond dinner and drinks.

Getting to Athi River and what to wear

The workshop is on Mombasa Road in Athi River; SF Duka gives its address as Mombasa Road, Athi River. Transport is not part of any ticket, so plan your own way out and leave time to be there before a 10:00 or 14:00 briefing, and ask us about timing when you book. Wear comfortable clothes that can take a paint or glue mark and closed shoes for the woodwork builds. Protective equipment is provided. Delivery of the finished piece is not included, so bring a bag that carries a canvas flat, or space in the car for a tray or a table.

Booking rules: non-refundable, and a week to reschedule

Bookings are non-refundable. Rescheduling needs at least one week's notice and depends on availability. Meals and refreshments are only included where they are confirmed with your booking, so say when you book if you want lunch. SF Duka also sells a one-off Craft Rave on 28 November 2026 on its ticket page: a full day from 11am to 6pm with a DJ, a choice of 12 crafts, 42 tickets and the opening weekend of The Craft Cafe. That event is sold by SF Duka directly, not through us.

Which build for whom

  • A child of 7 to 11 with a parent: string art, yarn art or the textured canvas. All three take home something that is finished by the end of the session.
  • Teenagers: the hot glue embroidery or the anime light box, both from 12.
  • A couple or two friends: Paint Your Partner, or two cutting boards side by side.
  • Someone who wants a useful object, not a wall piece: the cutting board or the leso tray.
  • A full day out: the picnic table. It is wrong for anyone who cannot give the whole day, and it is the only build priced above KES 5,000.
