Candle Making Classes in Nairobi: Three Workshops with Prices

Three places in Nairobi will teach you to pour your own scented candle: Wick & Wine's candle bar at the Marula Green pop-up market on Saturdays (KES 1,850 per person for one candle), Sere Selfcare's private session at your home or a venue (KES 3,770 per person for a 200 ml jar, KES 4,060 for 300 ml) and Snug Aura's workshop, which sends you home with two 200-gram candles for US$42 per person. The cheapest single candle is Wick & Wine. The best value for a group of four or more is Snug Aura, because the price covers two candles, snacks and refreshments. Sere Selfcare is the one to book if you want the class to come to you and you are booking for fewer than three people.

None of the three is a drop-in. Wick & Wine runs on a Saturday timetable with a minimum of three people per booking, Snug Aura needs four and sets the venue after you book, and Sere Selfcare runs on demand. Below is what each session includes, what it costs for your group, and who each one is wrong for.

Wick & Wine is the cheapest candle, on Saturdays at Marula Green

The Wick & Wine Candle Making Bar is a mobile candle bar set up at the Marula Green pop-up market on Marula Lane. You pick a fragrance, pour your own custom-scented candle and take it home as a keepsake. It costs KES 1,850 per person and runs on Saturdays at 10:00 am, on a schedule that started on 22 August 2026 and ends on 26 December 2026. The pouring itself takes 45 to 60 minutes, and the candle then needs one to two hours to cool and set before it can be moved safely, so plan to wander the market while it hardens rather than leaving straight away.

The price includes the host, all materials, drinking water, a photographer and photos from the day. Food and alcohol are not included, but a glass of wine or rosé is a KES 600 add-on for guests of legal drinking age. Ages 13 to 80 can book; there is room for five people per session and a minimum of three per booking. On the day, ask for the host at the reception. You handle hot wax and glass yourself, so follow the host's instructions and keep sleeves clear.

One honest warning: every Wick & Wine booking is final. There are no refunds, credits or exchanges for a change of plan, a late arrival or a missed session; you only get a refund or a transfer if the host cancels or reschedules for weather or another reason on their side. Fix your Saturday before you pay. The same team brings the bar to homes, Airbnbs, rooftops and private venues for birthdays, bridal showers and office groups; ask us about a private date when you book.

Sere Selfcare runs a private class at your place

The Private Candle-Making Experience with Sere Selfcare is a relaxed, hands-on private workshop: you learn the process, choose your style and pour a scented candle to take home. The rate is per person and depends on the jar, KES 3,770 for a 200 ml jar or KES 4,060 for 300 ml. The session can be held at your home or a venue you prefer, and a transport fee applies depending on where that is. Customised aprons and candle labels are available on request, which makes it the easiest of the three to turn into a gift for a bridal shower or a birthday.

Its default meeting point is Pickled Café & Bar in Lavington, so if you would rather not host, that is the venue. You can book for one person, which neither of the other two allows. The published details stop there: ask us how long the session runs, what is served and whether children can join when you book. Treat the per-person price as the candle and tuition, and budget separately for anything you would like to eat or drink.

Snug Aura gives you two candles and snacks for US$42

Snug Aura's Pour Your Own Scented Candle Workshop is the most complete session of the three. You explore a selection of fragrance oils, build a blend of your own, then wick, measure and hand-pour two 200-gram candles from scratch. Snacks and refreshments are served while the wax sets, and both candles go home packaged with instructions for curing and a first burn. The price is US$42 per person, with 5 per cent off for groups of six or more and 10 per cent off for twelve or more. The minimum booking is four people.

The session is timed at 1.5 hours, but the host's own guidance is to allow two to three hours including scent selection, pouring and initial cooling. The venue is in Nairobi and the exact pin and session time are sent after you book; transport there is not included, and neither are extra candles, premium materials or alcoholic drinks. An apron and tools are provided. Wear closed shoes and avoid loose sleeves around the warm wax, and tell the host beforehand if you are sensitive to fragrance.

Children aged 7 and over can take part, but only in a family session the host has approved in advance, with close adult supervision, because of the hot wax. The cancellation terms are fairer than Wick & Wine's: a full refund if you cancel at least seven days before, 50 per cent between three and seven days, and nothing inside 72 hours or for a no-show, because the materials are prepared in advance. You can also transfer your place to someone else with 24 hours' notice.

Which one to book

  • Two of you, or a cheap Saturday out: Wick & Wine, but you need a third person to meet the minimum, and your Saturday must be firm because there are no refunds.
  • A birthday, hen do or office group of four or more: Snug Aura. Two candles each, food included, and a discount from six people.
  • You want it at home, or you are booking alone: Sere Selfcare, and ask about the transport fee for your address.
  • Children: Snug Aura from age 7 in an approved family session; Wick & Wine from 13; ask Sere Selfcare before booking.
  • Wrong fit: anyone who cannot commit to a date (Wick & Wine), a group of three or fewer (Snug Aura), or anyone who wants a drink with it at a venue that is not licensed for one (ask before you book either private option).

Three things to know before any of them

Every session uses hot wax, so each host asks you to follow handling instructions and keep hair and loose clothing clear; wear closed shoes. A freshly poured candle is not ready to light: Wick & Wine's takes one to two hours to set before it can be moved, and Snug Aura sends you home with a curing time to respect before the first burn. And none of the three includes transport, so for Marula Lane or Lavington plan your ride, and for Snug Aura wait for the pin before you book a taxi.

More on Nairobi: hands-on workshops in Nairobi (beads, glass, flowers and cake), paint and sip sessions, a beginner flower-arranging class, date ideas beyond dinner and drinks and birthday party ideas with prices.
