The Start-up Visa route closed to all new applicants effective July 13, 2023. No new applications are being accepted. Current entrepreneurs should apply for the Innovator Founder Visa instead.
Age: 18 years or older
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age. This was a mandatory requirement for the Start-up Visa.
Valid passport with 6+ months validity
A valid passport or other valid travel document required for the entire visa stay period. The passport must be from the applicant's home country and remain valid throughout the application process.
Endorsement from approved UK endorsing body
An endorsement letter from an approved endorsing body (UK higher education institutions or business organisations with a history of sponsoring UK entrepreneurs) must be obtained. The endorsement letter must be issued no more than three months before the visa application date.
Proof of funds: £1,270 GBP (approximately $1,600 USD)
Evidence of personal funds to support yourself in the UK without relying on public funds. Minimum £1,270 must be held in a bank account for a continuous 28-day period before application.
English language proficiency: CEFR Level B2 or equivalent
Must demonstrate proficiency in English to a minimum level of CEFR B2. Acceptable evidence includes IELTS scores or equivalent qualifications. Exemptions may apply for native English speakers or those educated in English-speaking countries.
Business idea: Innovative, viable, and scalable
The business idea must be genuine, innovative, and have potential for growth and success in the UK market. Must meet new or existing market needs, demonstrate potential for growth, and show scalability with potential for job creation and national market expansion. Unlike the Innovator Visa, no specific investment amount is required.
Comprehensive business plan
A detailed business plan demonstrating the business concept, market opportunity, competitive advantage, financial viability, and growth potential within the UK market context. This plan must have been endorsed by an approved body.
Financial documents in English or Welsh
Bank statements and other financial documentation proving financial means. If documents are not in English or Welsh, they must be translated by an accredited translator. Both original and translated versions must be provided.
Genuine intention to undertake business activities in the UK
Must demonstrate genuine intent to establish and operate a business in the United Kingdom. This is assessed through the application materials and business plan.
