Wheelchair-Accessible Safaris and Beach Holidays in Tanzania and Zanzibar

Accessible Travel Kenya, the host behind our Kenya wheelchair-accessible trips, also runs twelve privately arranged Tanzania and Zanzibar options you can book with us: northern-circuit safaris from Arusha of 4, 5, 6 and 8 days at US$948 to US$2,211 per person, a 6-day safari that starts in Zanzibar at US$5,900, Mikumi and Nyerere day safaris by air at US$450, a 2-day Mikumi trip at US$780, a Mafia Island whale shark day at US$500, Zanzibar beach stays of 6 and 10 days at US$1,750 and US$2,070, a one-day Zanzibar excursion at US$450 and a 5-day Pemba Island trip at US$1,750. Each is designed for wheelchair users, travellers with reduced mobility, seniors, families and companions, with accessible transport matched to your needs, an unhurried pace and practical assistance throughout. Every booking goes to the host for approval, you share your mobility requirements in advance, and pickup and the exact accessible arrangements are confirmed after booking. The checklist further down is the part to use before you pay.

Two things to know about the table. The 4-day and 5-day northern-circuit safaris carry the same US$948 price, so ask us what the fifth day adds before you choose between them. The host also lists a 7-Day Zanzibar Beach Holiday at US$560 and a 7-day northern-circuit safari at US$948 that adds Lake Manyara, Ndutu, Materuni Waterfalls and Chemka Hot Springs. Both figures look wrong next to the host's other prices, so we have left them out until the host confirms them.

The northern circuit runs from Arusha by Land Cruiser, with a flight on the 8-day trip

All four northern-circuit safaris cover Tarangire, the Serengeti and Ngorongoro from Arusha, for up to six guests on the 4 and 5-day trips and up to ten on the longer two. The 6-Day Classic Tanzania Safari (US$1,738) is by Land Cruiser throughout. The 8-Day Tanzania Safari (US$2,211) adds Lake Manyara and uses a flight as well as the Land Cruiser. That flight is the main thing to ask about. Go2Africa's wheelchair safari guide warns that safari flights use light aircraft that seat few people and may not take a traveller who cannot be lifted out of the chair, and that the chair itself may not fit the hold or the weight limit. So ask which leg is flown, what the aircraft is, how you board and whether your chair travels with you. The same guide notes that paths at one Arusha lodge are gravel and need assistance, which is worth asking about wherever you sleep.

Mikumi and Nyerere are fly-in days in an open-sided 4x4

The Mikumi National Park Day Trip Safari (US$450), the 2-Day Mikumi National Park Trip (US$780) and the Nyerere National Park (Selous) Day Safari (US$450) all use return flights and an open-sided 4x4 game-drive vehicle. An open-sided vehicle is a different access question from a closed Land Cruiser: ask how you get in, whether you can stay in your own chair and whether the viewing is at window height. Tanzania National Parks' Mikumi visitor guide says scheduled and charter flights land at Mikumi Airstrip, with transfers arranged by lodges and operators, that by road the park is about 3 to 5 hours from Dar es Salaam, and that park hours end at dusk. Its rules also say you stay inside your vehicle except in designated areas, so plan toilet stops with the host before the drive. For what the standard Mikumi and Nyerere trips from Zanzibar and Dar include, read Mikumi or Nyerere from Zanzibar or Dar.

The 6-Day Tanzania Wildlife & Culture Safari from Zanzibar (US$5,900) combines Zanzibar with the mainland safari circuits by flight and Land Cruiser. At more than twice the price of the 8-day trip from Arusha, ask us for the day-by-day plan, the parks and the lodge names in writing before you compare the two.

Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia: boats are the access question

The 6-Day Zanzibar Beach Holiday (US$1,750) and the 10-Day Zanzibar Festive Holiday Package (US$2,070) are beach stays with private transfers; the ten-day version adds island experiences. The Zanzibar Excursion & Adventure (US$450) is a single day by private vehicle and motorised boat. The Mafia Whale Shark Adventure from Zanzibar (US$500) is a return flight and a local boat, and the host calls it seasonal, so ask which months it runs before you build a trip around it. The 5-Day Pemba Island Primate & Marine Safari (US$1,750) reaches Pemba by flight and moves by Land Cruiser. On all of these, ask how you board the boat, whether it is from a pier, a ramp or a lift from the beach, and what the landing looks like at the other end. On the beach stays, ask how you get from your room to the water and whether a beach wheelchair is available.

Ask these before you book

A private accessible trip is adapted to each guest, so the answers depend on you. Put these to the host through us before you pay and keep the answers with your booking.

Flights and vehicles

  • Which legs are flown, on what aircraft, and how do you board: by lift, by carry or by ambulift?
  • Does your chair travel on the same flight, and what are the size and weight limits?
  • Is the Land Cruiser fitted with a ramp or a lift, and can you stay seated in your own chair while it moves? How is a powered chair secured?
  • On the open-sided Mikumi and Nyerere vehicles, how do you get in, and is the viewing at window height from your chair?

Boats

  • On the Mafia, Zanzibar excursion and Pemba boats, is boarding by ramp, pier or a lift from the beach?
  • Is there a toilet on board, and how long is the longest crossing?

Rooms and beaches

  • Which lodge, camp or hotel is booked each night, by name?
  • Is the route from the vehicle to the room step-free, and is it paved, gravel or sand?
  • Door widths, roll-in shower or bath, shower chair, grab rails and bed height.
  • On the beach stays, how do you get from the room to the water, and is there a beach wheelchair?

Roads, crater and pace

  • How many hours of driving are there on each day, and which days have none?
  • What is the surface like on the Ngorongoro Crater descent and on the Serengeti tracks, and how rough is the ride?
  • Where are the accessible toilets on each driving day, and what happens on a long game drive?

Support and money

  • What does "practical assistance" cover: transfers in and out of vehicles, help in the room, or both?
  • Is a companion or carer booked as a separate guest, at the same price?
  • Is the price per person sharing, and what does a single room cost?
  • What is included: park fees, meals, flights, permits? What is the cancellation policy, in writing?
  • What travel insurance does the host expect, and does it cover mobility equipment?

What "transport matched to guest needs" means for you

It is a promise to adapt, not a description of a fixed vehicle. That is reasonable for a private trip, but it moves the work onto you. The more precise you are about chair dimensions and weight, whether you transfer independently and what you need in a bathroom, the more precise the answer you can hold the host to.

More on accessible and slower travel

The same host runs three Kenya options, compared in wheelchair-accessible safaris and tours in Kenya. For gorillas, gorilla trekking with mobility or fitness needs covers porters and carrying support. For judging a route's pace, see taking parents over 60 to Kenya and a Tanzania safari with parents and adult children.
