KWS Annual Pass: Prices and How Many Visits Make It Pay

The Kenya Wildlife Service annual pass costs KES 45,000 for an adult, KES 10,400 for a child, KES 80,000 for any two adults and KES 130,000 for two adults with as many as five children, on the conservation fee schedule in force since October 2025. At Nairobi National Park's citizen rate of KES 1,000 a day, an adult pass pays for itself on the 45th visit; at Amboseli or Lake Nakuru, where the day fee is KES 1,500, it takes 30. So the pass is for people who are in a park most weekends, and the arithmetic below gives the break-even for every park band. The schedule leaves a few things unsaid, including who may hold a pass and whether it covers the vehicle charge, so there is a short list of questions to put to KWS before you pay.

There are six cards on the KWS schedule

The KWS conservation fee schedule lists the annual cards in one table, all priced in shillings. Two of the six are not for ordinary visitors. The corporate pass is defined as access rights for utility providers with installations inside parks, reserves and sanctuaries. The marine annual pass is named at KES 10,500 without a definition; ask whether it covers the six marine protected areas on the fee table, where the citizen day fee is KES 500.

The adult pass pays off at 45 Nairobi National Park days, or 30 at Amboseli

Break-even is the pass price divided by the day fee you would otherwise pay, rounded up to whole visits. The day fees below are the East African citizen rates from the same schedule, because the pass is priced in shillings and that is the column most Kenyans pay from. The schedule defines the daily fee as a single entry valid for no more than 24 hours, so a weekend inside Amboseli with a night at a camp counts as two days, which shortens the break-even for anyone who camps or stays inside a park.

Residents holding a permit pay more per day (KES 1,350 at Nairobi National Park, KES 2,025 at Amboseli), so if KWS sells them the pass it pays off sooner, after 34 and 23 visits respectively. The schedule does not say whether it does; that is the first question below. A Nairobi self-driver who goes once a month will not get near 45 visits; a birder or photographer who is at the gate at 6:00 AM every Saturday will pass it before the year is out.

The family pass only beats separate cards once you have five children

A couple's pass plus child passes costs KES 90,400 with one child, KES 100,800 with two, KES 111,200 with three and KES 121,600 with four, all below the KES 130,000 family pass. Only at five children, where separate cards reach KES 132,000, does the family card come out KES 2,000 cheaper. If your household is two adults and two or three children, buy the couple's pass and child passes, or check whether the younger ones need a card at all: children aged five and younger are exempt from conservation fees, as are Kenyan citizens aged 70 and over, persons with disability, and tour drivers, guides and porters registered with the Tourism Regulatory Authority. At Nairobi National Park, two adults and two fee-paying children spend KES 3,000 a visit, so the KES 100,800 combination pays off on the 34th family outing.

Ask these before you buy

The schedule prices the cards and defines the terms, but it does not answer everything a buyer needs. Ask these before you book: which visitor categories can hold a pass (every card is priced in shillings, with no non-resident or resident column); whether the pass covers the daily vehicle charge, which is KES 600 for a car with fewer than six seats and KES 1,500 for a 6 to 12-seat van and sits in its own table; whether it covers every KWS park, reserve and sanctuary or leaves out the premium parks, the Nairobi Package sites or the marine areas; whether camping, night game drives and the other activity fees, which the schedule prices exclusive of conservation fees for everyone, are extra for pass holders; and where to apply, since KWSPay on eCitizen is where KWS takes park entry applications online. KWS answers on its toll-free line 0800 597 000 and at [email protected]. Our visitor rates guide covers which document proves each category at the gate.

A pass only saves money on tours that leave park entry out

Guided game drives price park entry two ways, and a pass holder should pick the ones that exclude it. The Nairobi National Park 4x4 Game Drive by Day Safaris Adventures is a US$39 per person package for Kenyan citizens and residents: a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, a driver-guide, bottled water and pickup and drop-off within the host's Nairobi service area, with park entry paid separately. The standard meeting point is the Nairobi Railway Museum; arrive 20 minutes early with your national ID or proof of residency, and your pass if you hold one. Cancel 14 days ahead for a full refund, 7 to 13 days ahead for 50%.

Nairobi National Park 4x4 Game Drive

Nairobi has a wild side. Set out from the city for a guided game drive through Nairobi National Park, where giraffes, rhinos, buffalo, lions and other plains wildlife roam with the skyline in the distance. A professional driver-guide leads the search from a 4x4 safari Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof. This USD 39 per-person resident package is for Kenyan citizens and residents. It includes the guided drive, bottled water, and Nairobi pickup and drop-off within the host’s confirmed service area. Park entry is paid separately, so bring a valid national ID or proof of residency. Days Safaris Adventures is a Nairobi-based destination-management company with experienced local guides.

  • Pickup Dropoff

The Nairobi National Park Sunrise Group Safari by Wango trail Safaris is US$75 per person in a shared pop-up-roof van, with hotel or agreed-point pickup around 5:30 to 6:00 AM so the group enters near the 6:00 AM gate opening, a driver-guide and bottled water; park entry is excluded and paid at the current rate for your age and residency. Breakfast is not included and the vehicle is shared, so it suits a pass holder who wants the early light without a private-vehicle price. Share your pickup point, a phone number and every guest's full name after booking.

Catch Nairobi National Park as the gates open and the city is still waking. From the raised roof of a shared safari van, scan open grassland and acacia country for rhinos, lions, buffalo, giraffes, zebras and prolific birdlife—with Nairobi’s skyline never far from view. The early group-joining format keeps the safari social and good value. Hotel pickup, a professional guide and drinking water are included; park entry is paid separately at the current official rate.

Compare that with the Nairobi National Park Half-Day Game Drive by Excellent GameSpotting Adventures, where park entry is built into the price: US$95 per person for six to fifteen travellers, US$105 each for four to five, US$135 each for two to three and US$205 solo, with hotel or airport pickup inside the published zone and a US$30 surcharge outside it. It is the simpler booking for a visitor, but a pass holder would be paying for entry twice. If you drive yourself, budget the vehicle charge on every visit until KWS confirms that your card covers it; self-drive versus a guided drive works through the rest of that sum. The park's own page has the gates opening at 6:00 AM and closing at 6:00 PM unless you are staying overnight, a 40 km/h limit, a 20-metre minimum distance from wildlife and a stay-in-the-vehicle rule outside designated areas, and all of that applies whatever ticket you hold.

Nairobi National Park Half-Day Game Drive

An early-morning or afternoon half-day game drive in Nairobi National Park, the wildlife reserve on the capital’s doorstep. After hotel or airport pickup, a professional driver-guide enters the park for approximately three hours of game viewing across open plains, forest, valleys and scrub. Possible sightings include black or white rhino, lion, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, antelope and extensive birdlife; elephants are not resident in this park and no wildlife sighting is guaranteed. The official product detail table captured 5 August 2026 starts at USD 95 per person for six to fifteen travelers, with USD 205 solo, USD 135 each for two to three, and USD 105 each for four to five. The page headline separately advertises “from USD 85,” but because its detailed table does not contain an USD 85 tier, Visatile uses the verifiable USD 95 table rate. Tripadvisor lists Excellent GameSpotting Adventures at 5.0/5 from 136 operator reviews. Feedback about its Nairobi wildlife outings highlights knowledgeable guides, punctual pickup, careful photo positioning and rhino and bird sightings.
