Zanzibar Day Tours on Land Compared: Spice Farm, Jozani and the Caves

A land-based day tour in Zanzibar costs US$45 to US$120 per person with Ussey Tours and Travel, and the price follows the drive and the entry fees more than the hours: the four-hour spice farm visit is US$45 with lunch, while Jozani Forest, Kuza Cave, the Mangapwani slave chambers and the full-day spice farm, Prison Island and Stone Town combination are all US$120. Every Ussey trip needs at least two people and collects you from your Zanzibar hotel lobby, with the pickup time confirmed after booking. Below is what each day covers, what is in the price, and when you are better off going on your own.

Where a cell says "ask us", the host publishes nothing on that point and we confirm it with them before you pay. Ussey's Stone Town heritage walk (US$45) and its Stone Town and Prison Island boat day (US$120) are covered in our Stone Town walking tour guide and our Zanzibar boat trips guide.

The spice farm is the cheapest half day, and lunch is in

Ussey's Zanzibar Spice Farm Tour is US$45 per person for about four hours at a working farm in Kizimbani. You walk the plots with a guide to see how cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla, turmeric and pepper grow, watch a coconut climber at work, taste fresh coconut and tropical fruit, eat a local lunch and finish at the spice shop. Hotel pickup and return, the guide, the fruit and the lunch are in the price. One caution: the same page also describes lunch and transfers as things that "can be offered", so ask us to confirm both for your date before you plan the afternoon around them. If you would rather cook what you pick, the Kaaribu spice farm and cooking class is the US$80 alternative; read our spice farm and cooking class guide.

One free day: the spice farm, Prison Island and Stone Town combination

If you have a single day for the island's classics, Ussey's Full Day Spice farm, Prison Island and Stone town tour does three of them in about eight hours for US$120 per adult and US$95 per child. The day runs farm first, then a boat to Prison Island (Changuu), where the Aldabra giant tortoises live and the island's past as a quarantine station is explained, then a guided walk through Stone Town taking in the Old Fort, the House of Wonders, Darajani Market and the waterfront. An air-conditioned car to and from your hotel, the spice farm entry, the Prison Island entry and a local lunch at the farm are included; alcohol and personal spending are not.

Two honest notes. UNESCO's World Heritage listing for Stone Town records a collapse at the House of Wonders in December 2020, so expect to see it from outside. And the boat leg exists to reach the tortoises; if snorkelling is what you want from a boat, that is a separate day and the boat trips guide above compares the options.

Jozani, Paje and The Rock: the east coast in a day

Ussey's Jozani Forest, Paje beach and The Rock restaurant is an eight-hour day for US$120 per person. It starts in Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park, which Ussey describes as Zanzibar's largest protected forest, on a guided walk for the red colobus monkeys and the mangroves, continues to Paje beach on the east coast, known for kitesurfing and seaweed farming, and ends at The Rock, the restaurant built on a rock off Michamvi Pingwe beach. Hotel pickup and return, the forest entrance fees and the guide are included. Your meal at The Rock is not, and Ussey notes that dinner there needs your own reservation, so book the table before the tour rather than on the day. You get a full refund if you cancel 48 hours or more ahead and half back at 24 hours.

This is the right day if you are staying on the north or west coast and want to see the east side once. If you are already based in Paje or Jambiani, the forest and the beach are part of your own coast, so a taxi to Jozani costs less than the tour.

Kuza Cave: US$120 with transport, US$10 at the door

Ussey's Kuza Cave Cultural and Swimming Experience is four hours for US$120 per person: hotel pickup and return, the entrance fee and a guide for the limestone cavern near Jambiani, with time to swim in its clear pool. The price only makes sense when the drive is long. The centre's own site, kuzacave.com, lists cave entry at US$10, open 8.30am to 6.30pm every day, with no booking needed for the cave and a limit of 20 people inside at a time. It also sells a US$75 Swahili culture day with a cooking lesson, lunch and drumming, with transport within 50 km included. So if you are staying in Jambiani or Paje, go on your own; if you are in Nungwi or Stone Town, the tour's transfer is what you are paying for.

On the day: the cave is reached by a five-minute path with uneven ground and steps down, and the centre says it is not wheelchair accessible. The water is up to three metres deep, so non-swimmers should stay out of it and children need an adult beside them. Bring water shoes, a mask and a towel; the centre hires them out if you forget.

Mangapwani: the slave chambers on the west coast

Ussey's Mangapwani Coral Cave and Slave Chambers Tour is four hours for US$120 per person, with hotel pickup and return, entrance fees and a guide included. The chambers were cut into the coral rock and, as Ussey describes it, used after slavery was officially abolished, which makes this the heaviest of the six days; it suits people who want the history behind Stone Town's former slave market rather than a beach stop. UNESCO's listing notes that Zanzibar was one of the main slave-trading ports in East Africa and the base from which opponents such as David Livingstone campaigned, and that Christ Church Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town stands on the site of the last slave market. The cave sits among breadfruit and rambutan trees, and there is no swimming or lunch in the programme, so ask us about a meal stop if you book it for a morning.

An evening food walk, bookable for one

Mamis Tours and Travel's Zanzibar Food & Street Cuisine Tour is the one tour here you can book alone: US$45 per person for about five hours, an evening walk through Stone Town and Forodhani Gardens tasting Zanzibar mix, mishkaki, spice tea, coffee and Zanzibar pizza. The meeting point is confirmed after booking. Nothing is published about what the price covers beyond the walk, so ask us whether the tastings are included before you book.

Which day to book

  • One day, first visit: the US$120 spice farm, Prison Island and Stone Town day.
  • Half a day on a budget: the US$45 spice farm, lunch included.
  • Staying north or west and want the east coast once: Jozani, Paje and The Rock, US$120, with your Rock table booked first.
  • Staying in Paje or Jambiani: skip the Kuza tour and pay US$10 at the cave.
  • History over scenery: Mangapwani, US$120.
  • Travelling solo: the Mamis food walk, US$45, the only one without a two-person minimum.
