Climb Bisoke if you want the classic day with a crater lake at the top, Gahinga if you want the lowest summit at 3,474 m, Muhabura if you want the hardest climb that still fits in one day, and Karisimbi only if you have two days, a night in a tent and US$400 for the permit. All four are in Volcanoes National Park, start with a 7am report at the Kinigi headquarters, carry a minimum age of 15, and are sold as a Rwanda Development Board (RDB) permit plus a package from Kigali. Day permits are US$75 for Bisoke and Gahinga and US$100 for Muhabura for foreign visitors, and the one-day packages from Kigali on Visatile run US$350 to US$450 per person with the permit included.
If Bisoke is already your pick, our Bisoke in one day from Kigali guide has the hour-by-hour plan. This one is for choosing between the four.
The four volcanoes side by side
| Volcano | Summit | Days | RDB permit: foreign visitor / East African citizen / foreign resident | Group cap | At the top |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bisoke | 3,711 m | 1 (6 to 7 hours round trip) | US$75 / US$55 / US$60 | 16 | Crater lake, no swimming |
| Gahinga | 3,474 m | 1 | US$75 / US$55 / US$60 | 12 | Swampy caldera about 180 m across |
| Muhabura | 4,127 m | 1 | US$100 / US$60 / US$75 | 12 | Steep summit cone; RDB calls it the most difficult |
| Karisimbi | 4,507 m | 2, with an overnight camp | US$400 / US$200 / US$250 | 12 | Rwanda's highest point; snow possible June to August |
Rwandan citizens pay RWF 4,000 for Bisoke or Gahinga, RWF 5,000 for Muhabura and RWF 30,000 for Karisimbi. The resident rates need at least four consecutive months of residency or a work permit in your passport, and RDB checks documents at the park gate: a permit bought in the wrong category is refused at the entrance even though it was paid for. The portal pages are at Bisoke, Gahinga, Muhabura and Karisimbi.
Bisoke is the one most people should climb
RDB gives six to seven hours for the round trip, including about two hours of descent, for inexperienced hikers; experienced hikers can be up and down in under four. From the park offices it is about an hour's drive to the parking base, and RDB advises a 4x4 for it. The trail is non-technical but muddy and slippery on the steep sections, with stinging nettles beside it, so wear long trousers; gumboots, raincoats and gloves can be hired at the headquarters. Groups are capped at 16, the largest of the four. At the top is the crater lake, and swimming in it is not allowed.

Hope Tours Africa's 1 Day Bisoke Volcano Hike is US$440 per person with the permit, a vehicle with an English-speaking guide, water, refreshments and taxes; its itinerary mentions a packed breakfast but meals are otherwise not included, so carry your own lunch. Empirical Tours and Travel's One-Day Bisoke Volcano Hiking Excursion is US$450 per person and does include lunch, eaten at altitude, along with the permit, guide, transport and water; it leaves Kigali at about 4:30am to make the Kinigi briefing.

View experienceKigali Atlantis Tours' Full Day Mount Bisoke Hike is US$390.55 per person for up to six people and lets you choose Bisoke, Muhabura or Gahinga on the same private day, with transport, bottled water, a packed lunch, fees and taxes. It is a 15-hour day from Kigali pickup to drop-off.
Gahinga is the shortest summit and the quietest
At 3,474 m Gahinga is the smallest of the three volcanoes on the Rwanda-Uganda border, sitting between Muhabura and Sabyinyo. Its name means a small pile of stones in Kinyarwanda, and the top is a swampy caldera RDB puts at about 180 m across rather than a lake. The slopes are bamboo, which is mountain gorilla and golden monkey habitat, so you may hear more than you see. The permit is the same US$75 as Bisoke, but the group cap is 12.
SilverBird Tours Agency's 1-Day Mount Gahinga Volcano Hike from Kigali is US$350 per person. The listing includes the guided hike, hiking permit support, ranger or guide support, Kigali transfer support, lunch or a packed meal where arranged, and bottled water; porter fees, insurance and tips are extra. "Where arranged" is doing some work there, so ask us to confirm in writing that the permit itself is inside the US$350 and whether lunch is.
1-Day Mount Gahinga Volcano Hike from Kigali

View experienceMuhabura is the hardest one-day climb
Muhabura, also written Muhavura, is 4,127 m and the second tallest in Rwanda. RDB describes it as the most difficult of the day hikes because of the steepness and because the whole round trip has to be finished in one day; it puts the climb at about 5,000 feet, roughly 1,500 m, from base to peak. The name means "the guide", from the mountain's old use for navigation, and it can be seen from much of Rwanda and Uganda. The permit is US$100 for a foreign visitor and the group cap is 12. Part of the mountain lies in Uganda's Mgahinga Gorilla National Park.
No host on Visatile sells Muhabura as its own package. The Kigali Atlantis full-day hike above lets you choose it for the same US$390.55, so ask us for the Muhabura permit category and the pickup time; the 7am report plus the longest day climb of the four leaves no slack for a late start.
Karisimbi needs two days and a US$400 permit
Karisimbi is 4,507 m, the highest of the eight main Virunga mountains and the 11th highest in Africa, on the Rwanda-DRC border with Bisoke to its east. The name comes from amasimbi, snow, which RDB says mostly appears on the summit in the dry season of June, July and August. It is a two-day climb with a camp on the mountain, capped at 12 hikers, and the permit is US$400 for a foreign visitor, US$200 for an East African citizen and US$250 for a foreign resident. Between Karisimbi and Bisoke is the site of Karisoke, the research centre Dian Fossey founded; our Dian Fossey tomb hike guide covers that shorter walk.

Legacy Heritage Tours' 3 Days Bisoke and Karisimbi Hiking Trip is US$950 per person for up to six people and pairs the one-day Bisoke climb with the two-day Karisimbi ascent from Kigali. The listing publishes no inclusions, so before paying ask us to confirm in writing the camp and camping gear, meals on the mountain, porters, and that both permits (US$75 and US$400) are in the price. For a two-night mountain trip those four lines are most of the cost.

Good to know
Gahinga, at 3,474 m, is the lowest of the four summits and its permit is US$75 for a foreign visitor, the same as Bisoke. Bisoke at 3,711 m is the most climbed and takes six to seven hours round trip for inexperienced hikers, according to RDB.
US$75 for a foreign visitor, US$55 for an East African citizen, US$60 for a foreign resident in Rwanda and RWF 4,000 for a Rwandan citizen, per the RDB booking portal. Gahinga costs the same, Muhabura is US$100 and Karisimbi is US$400 for a foreign visitor.
No. Karisimbi is 4,507 m and RDB sells it as a two-day climb with an overnight camp on the mountain, capped at 12 hikers. The Legacy Heritage Tours package on Visatile gives it three days from Kigali together with Bisoke, at US$950 per person.
15 on all four: Bisoke, Gahinga, Muhabura and Karisimbi. Hikers report at the park's visitor centre at Kinigi at 7am.
The Hope Tours Africa (US$440) and Empirical Tours and Travel (US$450) one-day Bisoke packages list the permit as included, and Empirical's three-day trip includes both the Bisoke and golden monkey permits. SilverBird's US$350 Gahinga day lists permit support and Legacy Heritage's Karisimbi trip publishes no inclusions, so ask us to confirm those two in writing.
RDB calls Muhabura the most difficult of the day hikes because of its steepness and because the whole round trip, about 1,500 m of climbing to a 4,127 m summit, has to be done in one day. The permit is US$100 for a foreign visitor and groups are capped at 12.
