Weekend Getaways from Kampala: Jinja, Sipi, Lake Mburo, Murchison and More

The weekend getaways from Kampala that you can book now run from a US$55 village day in Naggalama to two days at Murchison Falls for US$100 to US$400 per person, with Jinja, Sipi Falls, Lake Mburo and Fort Portal in between. This list runs from the nearest to the furthest, says how many nights each really needs, and gives you one bookable experience per place. Prices are per person and were checked on 2 November 2026. Where a host publishes its rate in shillings, we give the shilling figure; the card shows the dollar equivalent.

1. Ewaffe Cultural Village, Naggalama: a Buganda day

Why go: It is the closest full day out on the list and the only one you do with your hands. At Ewaffe Cultural Village in Naggalama, Mukono, you are welcomed with a Kiganda dance, banana juice and roasted coffee beans, walk the medicinal garden, take the 15-minute path to a village well that has served the community for more than 200 years, taste local fruit, cook luwombo and matooke with the Sengas, eat a traditional lunch and then choose an afternoon of dressing in a gomesi or kanzu, pond fishing, barkcloth or elders' stories. It costs US$55 per international guest, US$49.50 per East African guest and UGX 88,000 per Ugandan guest, for groups of up to 20.

Go here instead of: a Kampala city tour, if you have done the markets and want to cook rather than look. The trade-off is that transport is not on the inclusions list, so plan your own ride to Naggalama and back; the price does cover entrance fees, the guide and local host, every activity session, the tastings, snacks, drinking water, lunch and a photographer who sends you the day's photos.

Best for: families and visiting friends who want one unhurried day. Not for anyone who dislikes walking on village paths.

Getting there: the village is mapped at Naggalama in Mukono District. It runs on demand, so request your date and wait for confirmation before you book a driver.

Ewaffe Cultural Village Experience

Welcome Upon arrival, you will be warmly welcomed with an energetic Kiganda dance performance, followed by a brief introduction to the day's activities. As a symbol of hospitality, you will be served fresh banana juice and roasted coffee beans, offering your first taste of Uganda's local flavours. Medicinal Garden Trail Enjoy a guided walk through the Medicinal Garden to discover the healing power of Uganda's indigenous plants, herbs and spices. Learn how local communities have used these natural remedies for generations. You can ask questions, touch the plants and taste selected herbs along the way. Journey to the Village Well Take a scenic 15-minute walk to a historic village well that has served the community for more than 200 years. Pass local homesteads and small farms while your guide explains the cultural importance of communal water collection and the well as a meeting point for generations. Local Fruit Tasting Relax with a tasting of locally sourced indigenous fruits, including bananas, watermelon, jackfruit and freshly cut sugarcane, complemented by cool pot water served by your host. Banana Juice Making & Traditional Cooking Join the village Sengas (traditional aunties) to learn how to make fresh banana juice and prepare Luwombo and Matooke. This hands-on session combines local cooking techniques, cultural stories and Ugandan hospitality. Traditional Lunch in the Village Enjoy a traditional Ugandan lunch in the village setting, featuring flavourful Luwombo, slow-cooked with local ingredients and served alongside other traditional dishes. Afternoon Storytelling & Village Games After lunch, choose from cultural activities such as dressing in traditional Ugandan attire—the Gomesi for women or Kanzu for men—traditional fishing at the village pond, learning about barkcloth making, or listening to village elders share local history and traditions. Finish with traditional village games and time to connect with your hosts. Guest pricing International guests: USD 55 per person East African guests: USD 49.50 per person Ugandan guests: UGX 88,000 per person This is a full-day, on-demand cultural experience.

Book it: the day above. Our Ewaffe guide walks through the programme hour by hour.

Our tip: mention dietary needs when you book; the host lists dietary options on request.

2. Jinja: the Source of the Nile in a day, or stay the night

Why go: Jinja is the classic Kampala weekend, and you can do it without rafting. The 1-Day Source of the Nile and Jinja Tour takes you to Ssezibwa Falls, stops at Jinja Bridge, puts you on a boat across Lake Victoria towards the Source of the Nile on Cliff Road and gives you lunch in Jinja before the drive back, for US$180 per person with entrances, lunch, the guide, the boat, transport and pickup within Kampala included. Pickup from Entebbe adds US$25.

Go here instead of: a rafting weekend, if the river is the point rather than the rapids. The trade-off for the day trip is a long day in the car. If you would rather sleep in Jinja, the 2 Days Jinja Source of the Nile Adventure adds a Mabira Forest nature walk and a night in Jinja, with a driver-guide, a 4x4, meals, accommodation and drinking water, for US$395 per person in a group of six, US$450 each for four, US$610 each for two and US$640 solo. Rafting, bungee, flat-water tubing and quad biking are optional extras on that trip, each at its own charge.

Best for: first-time visitors and anyone hosting relatives. Not for people who want the rapids themselves; for that read our Jinja rafting guide.

Getting there: both tours collect you in Kampala, so the only planning is the pickup point, confirmed with the host after booking.

1-Day Source of the Nile & Jinja Tour
Experience

1-Day Source of the Nile & Jinja Tour

Experience the beauty of Eastern Uganda on a full-day journey from Kampala to Jinja, the adventure capital of Uganda. Discover waterfalls, scenic landscapes, and the historic point where the Nile begins its journey north from Lake Victoria. Visit Ssezibwa Falls, continue to Jinja with a stop at Jinja Bridge, then take a boat trip across Lake Victoria toward the Source of the Nile. Enjoy lunch in Jinja before beginning the journey back to Kampala. A perfect one-day escape from Kampala combining nature, culture, history, and the legendary Source of the Nile. Price: $180 per person. Pickup within Kampala is included; pickup from outside Kampala (Entebbe) costs an extra $25.

per person · 1 day

Book it: the day tour above, or the two-day version on Visatile. The non-rafting day is compared in detail in Jinja day trip from Kampala, and the gentler river options are in Nile tubing and beginner kayaking.

Our tip: the two-day price falls sharply with group size, so a weekend of six pays US$395 each where a couple pays US$610 each. Fill the car.

3. Sipi Falls: two days of waterfalls and coffee

Why go: Sipi is the active weekend. The Sipi Falls Escape drives east on day one, with lunch, check-in and a guided Sipi Falls hike, then gives you a coffee experience, a final viewpoint or short walk and lunch on day two before the return to Kampala. Scenes Travels publishes a starting rate of UGX 690,000 per person, or UGX 540,000 each for groups of ten or more, covering transport and fuel, the driver-guide, accommodation, the meals stated and the listed activities.

Go here instead of: Jinja, if you want hills and cool air rather than the lake. The trade-off is distance: Sipi is in Kapchorwa, in the far east, and the host confirms the final pickup point, dates and accommodation on its quotation, so ask us for that in writing before you pay. Personal expenses, insurance and any activity not listed are extra.

Best for: walkers and coffee people. Not for anyone with knee trouble; the falls hike is the heart of day one.

Getting there: pickup begins in Kampala or Entebbe and the road east is part of the price.

Book it: the two-day escape above. Whether two days is enough, and what to pack for the hike, is in Sipi Falls from Kampala.

Our tip: leave Kampala early on the Saturday; the hike is on arrival day, and you want daylight left for it.

4. Lake Mburo: the nearest savanna park, two nights

Why go: The Uganda Wildlife Authority calls Lake Mburo the closest of all Uganda's national parks to the capital, about 228 km and roughly three and a half hours by road, and it is the park for zebras, Uganda's only impalas and more than 315 bird species. The Lake Mburo and Western Trails trip leaves Kampala in the morning, stops at the Equator, enters the park for an evening game drive, spends day two on an early drive or guided walk and an Ankole cultural experience, and returns on day three after a short drive. Scenes Travels lists it from UGX 780,000 per person, or UGX 620,000 each for ten or more, with transport and fuel, the driver-guide, accommodation, the meals stated and the listed activities.

Go here instead of: Murchison, if you want a shorter drive and to get out of the vehicle; UWA offers guided walking safaris here because the park has no elephants and, as it notes, leopards and hyenas are rarely seen. The trade-off is fewer big animals. Park entry is US$40 for a foreign non-resident, US$30 for a foreign resident and UGX 20,000 for an East African, so ask us if your quotation includes it. A separate guided walking safari with an Equator stop is listed at US$55 per person, but it publishes no inclusions, so ask us what it covers before you book it.

Best for: people on their first Ugandan safari and anyone who wants to walk. Not for anyone who needs elephants or lions to call it a safari.

Getting there: UWA lists two gates from the Kampala side, Nshara Gate about 5 km off the highway and Sanga Gate about 13 km from Sanga trading centre, both about 2 km from the Rwonyo headquarters. The trip's transport handles this for you.

Book it: the three-day trip above. For a longer western route that builds on Mburo, see six days in Uganda through Lake Mburo and Ankole country.

Our tip: the Equator stop is on the way; ask the driver to make it on the outbound leg while the light is good.

5. Murchison Falls and Ziwa: two big days, best with six people

Why go: Two of Uganda's headline sights in one weekend. The 2 Days Murchison Falls National Park Trip drives to the park after an early breakfast, takes a two-hour boat cruise up the Nile to the foot of the falls past hippos, crocodiles and water birds, hikes to the top of the falls and sleeps at Fort Murchison River Lodge on full board. Day two is a three- to four-hour game drive, then rhino tracking on foot at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, lunch and the return to Kampala or Entebbe. Park and activity fees, the boat, rhino tracking, the ferry crossing, meals, the lodge, an English-speaking driver-guide, a 4x4 and drinking water are included.

Go here instead of: Lake Mburo, if the falls and rhinos matter more than a short drive. The trade-off is the road: UWA puts the park 305 km north of Kampala, four to five hours to the southern gate and another hour or two to most lodges. The price depends on your group: US$400 each for two, about US$250 each for three, US$175 for four, US$130 for five and US$100 each for six, with a minimum of two people. Tips, insurance and extra nights are not included.

Best for: groups of four to six who can share the vehicle. Not for a couple on a budget, who pay four times the six-person rate.

Getting there: transport in the 4x4 is part of the trip; pickup details are confirmed with the host after booking. UWA notes the Victoria Nile here is forced through an 8-metre gap and drops 45 metres, which is what the boat and the hike are for.

2 Days Murchison Falls National Park Trip
Experience

2 Days Murchison Falls National Park Trip

A 2-day wildlife safari to Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda’s largest conservation area. Travel through the park for a Nile boat cruise to the bottom of Murchison Falls, a hike to the top of the falls, a game drive and rhino tracking at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Price per person depends on group size: US$400 each for 2 people, about US$250 for 3, US$175 for 4, US$130 for 5 and US$100 for 6 (checkout applies the group discount automatically and may differ from these figures by a few dollars). Minimum group size is 2. The safari includes park and activity fees, meals, accommodation, a professional English-speaking driver/guide, transport in a 4x4 safari vehicle and drinking water. Excludes international flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal expenses.

per person · 2 days

Minimum 2 guests

Book it: the two-day trip above. The day-by-day plan is in Murchison Falls and Ziwa rhinos in two days, and if you can take a Friday off, Murchison safaris of 2 to 4 days compared shows what the extra days buy.

Our tip: wear closed walking shoes; the hike to the top of the falls and the rhino walk are both on foot.

6. Fort Portal: caves, crater lakes and the Tooro Palace

Why go: For a weekend with history in it. The Fort Portal Get-Away is a two-day trip that drives west to Fort Portal, visits the Amabere Caves and the crater lakes, checks you into a three-star hotel for dinner and the night, then gives you the Tooro Palace, a hot springs experience and lunch before the return to Kampala. Transport and fuel, the driver-guide, accommodation, the meals stated and the listed activities are included.

Go here instead of: Sipi, if you want culture and crater lakes rather than a hike. The trade-off is that the host confirms dates, accommodation and inclusions on its quotation, and we are not quoting the card price here because it is a currency conversion; ask us for the current rate.

Best for: couples and anyone who has already done Jinja and Mburo. Not for anyone who wants wildlife as the main event.

Getting there: pickup begins in Kampala or Entebbe; the final point is confirmed on the quotation.

Book it: the two-day trip is on Visatile. For a slower three-day version of the same area, read Amabere Caves and Fort Portal's crater lakes.

Our tip: put the hot springs on day two as the itinerary does; after the drive and the caves, you will want them.

How to use this list

Choose by nights first. With a single free day, Ewaffe and the Jinja day tour are the honest options. With one night, Jinja, Sipi, Fort Portal and Murchison all work, and Murchison is the one where filling the car matters most. Lake Mburo wants two nights because of the three-day shape of the trip. For the Scenes Travels trips, the quotation is the document that fixes your dates, hotel and inclusions, so read it before you pay, and check whether park entry is inside it.
