Village Homestays in Rwanda: Kinigi, Byimana and Kamonyi Compared

You can book three village homestays in Rwanda: a night with a family near Kinigi for US$60 per person, Isano's community homestay in Kamonyi for US$80, and Azizi Life's artisan home stay in Byimana, Ruhango, for US$100. All three are a night in a rural family's own home, not a guesthouse, and all three take a single traveller. They differ in where they are, what's included and, most of all, how much each host tells you before you go. Azizi Life publishes an hour-by-hour example of the night; the Kinigi host confirms the household, meals and activities only after you ask.

Three stays in three regions

Kinigi is the village beside Volcanoes National Park in the north, so that stay fits a gorilla-trekking trip. Kamonyi is the district where Isano works with women's cooperatives. Byimana is about an hour and a half's drive from Kigali in Ruhango District, and Azizi Life's base there also runs day experiences with artisan cooperatives that you can add to the night. Transport is extra for all three, and in each case the exact meeting point or household is confirmed after you book.

Azizi Life's home stay tells you exactly what the night is like

This is the stay to choose if you want no surprises. You meet at the Azizi Life office and boutique in Byimana at 15:30, drive to the village and walk the last ten minutes from the road to the house (tell us if that's a problem, because the host can make other arrangements). Your hostess is a rural artisan; the host says these homes are mud brick with one larger front room for visitors and a few small bedrooms, an outdoor kitchen, an enclosed pit latrine, a bathing outhouse and animal stalls behind, and most host families have about four children at home. You help with the evening meal or gather firewood, take a short walk round the village at 17:00, light a small bonfire at 18:00, hear traditional stories, eat at 19:00 and go to bed around 21:50, or earlier if you ask. Breakfast at 07:30 is black tea with bread and local fruit, and you're back at the boutique by 08:30, where the host offers you its guest room for a hot shower (host's example home stay).

The practical details are the useful part. Your bed is valley grass under a mat, with sheets, blankets and Rwandan pillows, on a frame or on the floor. All guests share one room unless you ask for something different. A mosquito net is provided; bring repellent for the evening. The house has no electricity, so the family uses oil lanterns or solar lamps. The host supplies hand sanitiser, toilet paper and plenty of bottled water, brings a first aid kit, and says your hosts may heat water for your bucket bath. An Azizi Life translator is with you the whole time. The price is US$100 per person, from one guest up to eight, and the host says 5% of its tourism revenue goes to its community non-profit. Women are asked to wear trousers or a skirt covering the knees, and pyjama bottoms to the knee at night.

Isano's homestay in Kamonyi includes a guide, lunch and a community fund

Isano Experiences is a Kigali-based, RDB-registered community tourism company that partners with women's cooperatives in Kamonyi District (Isano Experiences). Its overnight homestay is two days with a rural host family through that network: you share meals, join the daily routines, learn local customs and swap stories. The price is US$80 per person and the group is capped at six, so it works for a couple or a small family and stays small.

What's in the US$80 is spelled out: a local English- or French-speaking guide, lunch with the community, bottled water during the day, village snacks, a refreshment drink at the end of the day, all materials needed, first aid support, a fair wage for the host community and a contribution to Isano's community development fund. Transport is extra unless you agree it when booking, and so are personal purchases, tips and any activity not confirmed in advance. You meet your host at an agreed community meeting point in Kamonyi, with directions sent after booking. Ask us about dinner and breakfast when you book: the inclusions list names lunch and snacks, so confirm the evening meal before you go.

The Kinigi homestay is the cheapest, and the one to ask the most about

Beyond the Gorilla's Experience sells a night with a local family near Kinigi for US$60 per person, from one guest, with no upper limit published. The host advertises it as a one-to-two-day experience, with VAT included and transport extra. It's the obvious choice if you're already in Kinigi for gorillas or golden monkeys and want a night in the village rather than another lodge night; our Kinigi guide covers how the same host's village walks and weaving fit around a trek.

What it doesn't publish is everything else. The host confirms the exact household, meals and activities before your booking is final, and the meeting point afterwards. So treat the booking as a conversation. Ask these before you book:

  • How many meals are included, and is dinner cooked with the family?
  • Is the room private, or shared with other guests?
  • Is there electricity, and what is the toilet and washing arrangement?
  • Is a translator or guide with you in the evening?
  • How far is the house from the road, and from the park headquarters at Kinigi?
  • What happens on the second day, if you book it as two days?

What to pack for a village night

Azizi Life's packing advice applies to all three stays, since the houses are rural family homes. Bring insect repellent as well as using the net. Pack a waterproof jacket in the rainy seasons the host plans around, February to June and September to November. Wear closed walking shoes for the paths, which are steep and slippery after rain, and bring sandals or flip-flops for the evening and morning. Tell us about food allergies when you book, because the food may contain nuts, and have health insurance that covers the trip, which the host requires. Expect curiosity: the host says neighbours sometimes come to look at foreign visitors, and very occasionally someone may ask for money, to which the host's advice is a polite no, because your fee already pays the family and the group.

Which one to choose

  • You want to know what you're getting into: Azizi Life in Byimana, US$100. The most detail, the most structured evening, and a hot shower afterwards.
  • Best value with a guide included: Isano in Kamonyi, US$80, capped at six.
  • You're in Kinigi for the gorillas: the Kinigi homestay, US$60, with the questions above asked first.
  • Travelling alone: any of the three takes one guest; none of them needs a minimum of two.
  • Not for you if: you need electricity, a private bathroom or a mattress. These are family homes, and the Azizi Life page is honest that the bed may be on the floor.
