Underrated East Africa Trips Worth Planning for 2027

Six places in East Africa that reward a 2027 trip more than the usual Mara-and-Zanzibar circuit: Tsavo and Lamu in Kenya, Akagera and Nyungwe in Rwanda, Murchison Falls in Uganda and Mikumi in Tanzania. Lonely Planet put Tsavo East and West on its Best in Travel 2027 list in September 2026, and that is the reason to plan the rest of this list for next year too: these are the parks and towns that still have space, and every pick below has at least one trip you can book today, from a US$20 walk in Lamu to a US$1,347.50 three-day Nyungwe safari with the chimpanzee permit included.

Each pick says what the obvious alternative is and who should skip it. Prices are per person unless we say otherwise, and where a host has not spelled out what is included, we say so and tell you what to ask.

1. Tsavo East and West, Kenya

Why go: Lonely Planet's 2027 list names Tsavo "best for elephant herds and lava plains", and its September 2026 guide describes two different parks: Tsavo East is drier and flatter with open grassland and the better elephant sightings, while Tsavo West has volcanic hills, the Shetani lava flow, Mzima Springs and the Ngulia rhino sanctuary. The same guide says Tsavo "is sometimes overshadowed by the Masai Mara", which is the point.

Go here instead of: the Maasai Mara. You trade the Mara's dense, predictable game viewing and its crowds for red-earth space and long distances between sightings. If you have one safari in your life and it must be big cats, stay with the Mara.

Best for: second-time Kenya visitors, people combining Nairobi with the coast, and anyone who dislikes queues of vehicles at a sighting. Not for a two-night trip where you want guaranteed lions.

Getting there: Lonely Planet's guide puts the drive from Nairobi or Mombasa to Mtito Andei at around four hours, with the Voi gate about five hours from Nairobi and three from Mombasa; the Madaraka Express train stops at both Voi and Mtito Andei.

Book it: the 3-Day Tsavo East and West Safari is US$640 per person and runs on demand, with pickup arranged in Nairobi or on the coast after booking. The host has not listed its inclusions, so ask us about park fees, meals and the lodge before you pay.

3-Day Tsavo East & West Safari | Big Five Wildlife Tour

A three-day Tsavo safari with Collective African Tours(C.A.T.S), built around Kenya's vast red-earth wilderness, big-game viewing and the contrast between Tsavo East and Tsavo West. Published C.A.T.S route: Tsavo East National Park and Tsavo West National Park. Published price: from USD 640 per person.

per person

Our tip: Lonely Planet's guide lists non-resident entry at US$80 per adult and US$40 per child for each park, paid by card at the gate or in advance through Kenya Wildlife Service, so a two-park trip carries two sets of fees. Our Tsavo 3, 5 and 8-day comparison and Tsavo East from Diani go deeper.

2. Lamu, Kenya

Why go: UNESCO calls Lamu Old Town the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, inhabited without a break for over 700 years, with a 16-hectare core of coral-stone houses, carved doors and narrow lanes about 350 km north of Mombasa. It is a working town, not a museum.

Go here instead of: a resort week in Diani or Watamu. Lamu has no beach-resort strip and little nightlife; days are walks, dhows and food. If you want a pool, a buffet and water sports on tap, the south coast suits you better.

Best for: couples and slow travellers who like old towns and boats. Less good for small children who need a pool, or for anyone uneasy with the security picture below.

Getting there: the UK Foreign Office advises travelling to Lamu Island and Manda Island only by air, into Lamu airport on Manda Island, and not by road, because it advises against all travel to parts of Lamu County on the mainland. Read that page before you book.

Book it: the Lamu Old Town Walking Tour is US$20 per person with hotel pickup, a local English-speaking guide, markets, the seafront and selected craft workshops; museum and fort entry is extra. Takwa Ruins by Boat is US$100 per private group of up to four, with the return boat to Manda Island, a captain and guide, and the walk through the 15th and 16th-century settlement; the Takwa admission fee is paid separately through eCitizen and departure times follow the tide. Both are in our Lamu beyond Old Town guide.

Our tip: the Takwa host confirms the crossing time only after checking the day's tide and weather, so book it for a day with nothing else fixed. For a full plan, see our Lamu heritage itinerary.

3. Akagera, Rwanda

Why go: African Parks, which co-manages Akagera with the Rwanda Development Board, reintroduced lions in 2015, eastern black rhino in 2017 and 2019 and 30 southern white rhino in 2021, then added 70 more white rhino in June 2025. Almost 500 bird species are recorded, and in 2025 it became the first park in the African Parks network to cover its operating costs from its own revenue. It is Central Africa's largest protected wetland and Rwanda's only savannah park.

Go here instead of: a Rwanda trip that is only gorillas. Akagera adds a savannah day to a primate itinerary without changing countries. It is not a substitute for the Serengeti or the Mara in scale.

Best for: anyone with a spare day in Kigali, families, and gorilla trekkers who want big animals too. Not for people who need a full camp-and-lodge safari experience; most visits are day trips.

Getting there: the day trip below runs 12 hours door to door from Kigali, with about six hours inside the park.

Book it: the Private Full-Day Tour Akagera Game Drive is US$380.15 per person for up to six people, with Kigali pickup and drop-off, private transport, a driver guide, bottled water, lunch and entrance fees, plus a short stop at the Imigongo art centre on the way.

Our tip: if you want the Lake Ihema boat, check it is in your plan first; our Akagera day-safari guide explains which trips include it, and the overnight comparison covers two and three-day options.

4. Nyungwe, Rwanda

Why go: Nyungwe is one of Africa's oldest rainforests, covering 1,019 km² of Afromontane forest, bamboo and wetland, with 13 primate species including chimpanzees, 345 recorded bird species and a 1,935-metre zipline, according to African Parks, which has managed it since 2020. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2023.

Go here instead of: Bwindi, if primates are the goal and gorilla permits are beyond your budget. Nyungwe gives you chimpanzees and a canopy walkway, not gorillas. Trekking is on steep forest paths and chimpanzees move fast, so it is a harder, less guaranteed sighting.

Best for: fit walkers, birders and anyone building a Rwanda loop that goes south. Not for people with limited mobility or a fixed two-day schedule.

Getting there: the three-day safari below leaves Kigali early on day one, stops at the King's Palace Museum in Nyanza and reaches the forest lodge by late afternoon; day two starts with a 5:00 AM briefing for the chimpanzee trek.

Book it: the 3-Day Nyungwe Chimpanzee and Canopy Walk Safari is US$1,347.50 per person with a private 4x4 and driver-guide, two nights' bed and breakfast, the chimpanzee trekking permit, canopy walkway fees, museum entry, and water and snacks for the trek. Lunches, dinners, your Rwanda visa, flights and tips are not included.

3-Day Nyungwe Chimpanzee & Canopy Walk Safari

Trade the city for the clouds in Africa's most ancient mountain rainforest. This 3-Day Nyungwe Chimpanzee & Canopy Walk Safari is an adrenaline-fueled journey into the heart of the Albertine Rift. You will spend your mornings tracking wild Chimpanzees through the dense undergrowth and your afternoons walking among the treetops on a 160-meter-long Canopy Walkway.

Our tip: the canopy walkway on this trip is on the afternoon of the trekking day, so pack for both a dawn forest walk and an exposed, high bridge. Our guides on how long to stay in Nyungwe and the 1 to 5-day package comparison cover the alternatives.

5. Murchison Falls, Uganda

Why go: the Victoria Nile is forced through an 8-metre gorge and drops 45 metres, the park covers 3,840 km², and the Uganda Wildlife Authority counts 144 mammal and 556 bird species, with shoebills along the Albert Delta. It is Uganda's oldest and largest conservation area.

Go here instead of: a Uganda trip that is only Bwindi gorillas. Murchison gives you a classic savannah safari and a boat to the base of the falls in three days from Kampala. It does not give you gorillas, and the drive is long.

Best for: first-time safari-goers on a budget, families with teenagers and anyone adding days before or after gorilla trekking. Not for people who want to avoid long road days.

Getting there: the Uganda Wildlife Authority puts the park 305 km north of Kampala, four to five hours to the southern gate plus another one to two hours to most lodges, or a scheduled or charter flight from Entebbe or Kajjansi to Pakuba airfield. Entry is US$45 for foreign non-residents, US$35 for foreign residents and UGX 25,000 for East Africans.

Book it: the Murchison Falls Wildlife Safari is a three-day private trip from Kampala at US$750 per person for up to seven people: a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary on day one, an early game drive and the Nile boat cruise to the base of the falls plus the top-of-the-falls visit on day two, and the return with lunch en route on day three. The price covers the guide, 4x4, pickup and drop-off, water, game drives, the boat and two nights' accommodation. Ask us about meals and park fees before you book.

per person · 3 days

Our tip: if you can fill six places, the 3-Day Murchison Falls Safari, Rhino Tracking and Nile Boat Ride at US$718 per person includes full board and park fees, but it has a minimum booking of six and takes ages 13 to 75. All the packages are compared in Murchison Falls packages from Kampala.

6. Mikumi, Tanzania

Why go: Mikumi's TANAPA brochure describes a 3,230 km² park 288 km west of Dar es Salaam, sharing one ecosystem with Nyerere National Park, with four of the big five on the Mkata floodplain and more than 400 bird species. TANAPA itself calls it the ideal park for weekend visitors from Dar who cannot spare an extended safari.

Go here instead of: flying north to Arusha for a two-day Serengeti taste. From Dar or Zanzibar, Mikumi is reachable by train and road without an internal flight. Game density is lower than the Serengeti in the green months; the brochure says the dry season is best, though the northern part stays open all year.

Best for: people ending a Zanzibar holiday, business travellers in Dar with a weekend, and anyone who wants a first safari without a big transfer. Not for people chasing the migration.

Getting there: the two-day trip below goes by the SGR train from Dar es Salaam; TANAPA's park gate opens at 06:00 and closes at 18:00.

Book it: 2 Days Mikumi Safari from Dar es Salaam by SGR Train is US$500 per person with a minimum of two guests and a maximum of twelve. The host confirms pickup, timing and accommodation after booking and has not listed inclusions, so ask us about park fees and meals.

Minimum 2 guests

Our tip: TANAPA sells a day permit valid for twelve daylight hours and a sleep-over permit valid for 24 hours, both allowing re-entry, so a two-day trip with one night inside the park can run on one permit. Compare train, road and fly-in options in Mikumi or Nyerere from Zanzibar or Dar.

How to use this list

Pick one country and two places rather than all six. Kenya pairs Tsavo with Lamu by way of the coast; Rwanda pairs Akagera and Nyungwe on either side of Kigali; Uganda's Murchison fits before or after Bwindi; Mikumi is the add-on to a Zanzibar or Dar trip. Entry rules, permits and the East Africa Tourist Visa are covered in our visa guide, and the month-by-month safari guide helps you choose the season.
