Mlango Farm in Ngecha: What a Day Visit Costs and What to Book

A day visit to Mlango Farm in Ngecha costs KES 3,500 per person, with children aged 3 to 11 at KES 1,750 and under-3s free. You arrive at 11:00, walk the organic farm with a guide and sit down to a three-course lunch cooked from what grows there. The same price buys three other half-day programmes at the farm: a farm-to-table cooking class, a practical composting workshop and a tree-planting session in the educational forest. All four are by appointment, none includes transport, and the farm is alcohol-free. Here is what each one includes, who it suits and how to stack them into a day.

The farm is in Ngecha, about 45 minutes from Nairobi

Mlango Farm is an organic vegetable farm in Ngecha, the artists' village in Kiambu County. The farm describes the drive from Nairobi as about 45 minutes, and it has grown fruit trees and vegetables on what was neglected family land since 2007. Its harvest is delivered to customers in Nairobi in weekly baskets, which is why the visit is built around seeing where that food comes from (Mlango Farm).

Two rules apply to every programme. The farm welcomes visitors on appointment only, so book before you drive out. And it is consciously alcohol-free, in honour of its late founder Kamande Njenga. Bring your own transport or ask us about a driver when you book.

The day visit starts at 11:00 and ends with a garden lunch

The Educational Daytrip is the one to book if you have never been. Guests are welcomed at 11:00 with tea or coffee, then join the host for a guided walk through the crops, the animals and the farm's sustainable practices. Children get their own activities. Lunch is three courses in the garden, with vegetarian and vegan options if you say so in advance (farm visits page).

During the walk you can harvest a basket of seasonal vegetables with the host for KES 1,200 per basket, basket provided. It is an add-on, not part of the KES 3,500, and it is the easiest souvenir here. The programme takes up to 30 people and you can book for one.

The cooking class ends with the meal you made

The Farm-to-Table Cooking Class starts in the garden, where you learn how the day's produce is chosen, then moves to hands-on cooking with the farm team using low-waste techniques. Ingredients, equipment, a welcome refreshment and drinking water are included, and the dishes you cook become the shared meal. The menu changes with the season and is confirmed before the class, so ask when you book if you have your heart set on a dish.

It is beginner-friendly: tasks are demonstrated and adjusted to the group. Expect knives, hot cookware and open flames, so wear closed shoes and tie long hair back. The farm's own description of children's cooking mentions its biogas stove, cob oven and traditional three-stone fire. The class takes up to 16 people. Alcohol and extra produce are not included.

The composting workshop doesn't include lunch unless you ask

The Practical Composting Workshop is the most useful half-day here if you have a kitchen garden, a school plot or an office with a canteen. You tour the farm's working compost systems, learn to balance green and brown materials, moisture and airflow, then build and troubleshoot a mix in a hands-on demonstration. You leave with a compost plan matched to your own space and waste, plus take-home guidance.

Lunch is not included by default; request it when you confirm the booking, or pair the workshop with the day visit. Protective clothing is not provided, so wear closed shoes and clothes that can get dusty or muddy, and use gloves when the team hands them out. The session is for beginners and takes up to 20 people. You do not take bins or tools home.

You plant a seedling the farm chooses, in its educational forest

Plant a Legacy Tree is a guided planting in the farm's educational play forest. After an environmental briefing you prepare the site, plant and water a young tree, then talk through how it will establish and who looks after it. The seedling, the tools and the forest visit are included. The farm picks a species suited to the site and the season, so you cannot choose your own.

Two honest limits. Planting a tree does not give you ownership of it or exclusive access later, and food is only included if you confirm it. It works for a birthday, a memorial or an anniversary if you tell the farm the occasion in advance, and children can plant with an adult alongside. Up to 30 people.

Transport to the farm is excluded from all four. The child rate is published for the day visit only; ask us about children on the other three when you book.

Wear closed shoes and expect mud in the rains

Every programme runs on uneven outdoor paths through working farm areas with animals, plants and tools. The farm asks for comfortable warm clothes and warns of a little mud in the rainy season, so closed shoes, a layer and sun or rain protection cover it. Bring water, keep children close to the guide, and tell the farm about allergies, mobility or accessibility needs before you arrive rather than on the day.

Cancel four days ahead and you pay nothing

The farm takes on extra staff, harvests and cooks for every booking, so its cancellation ladder is steeper than most Nairobi day activities. Cancelling four or more days before the visit costs nothing. Three days before costs 30% of the booking, two days before 50%, one day before 75% and the day itself 90% (farm visits page). Fix your date before you book rather than holding one you might drop.

You can stay the night, and groups can add more workshops

The farm has farm-stay accommodation: camping, cob houses and tents to rent or bring. It pitches this at families with young children, with food and children's entertainment handled by the farm. For groups, birthdays and team days it also runs a permaculture course, an artemisia course for NGOs working in malaria areas, scarecrow making, an ecobricks workshop, a creativity lab and nature-print art workshops. None of those is bookable on its own here yet, so ask us when you enquire about a group day. The farmhouse shows art for sale by Ngecha artists and sometimes an artist in residence.

Which one to book

  • First visit, or a family day out: the Educational Daytrip. It is the only one with lunch built in and a published child price.
  • You cook at home and want new habits: the cooking class, ideally on the same day as a farm walk.
  • You have a garden, a school plot or an office kitchen: the composting workshop. Add lunch when you book.
  • Marking an occasion: plant a tree, and say what the occasion is.
  • Wrong fit: anyone who wants a drink with lunch, anyone without transport, and anyone whose dates might move within four days.
