Maasai Village Day Tours from Arusha and Moshi Compared

A Maasai village day from Arusha or Moshi costs US$80 to US$175 per person here, and only one of the six tours publishes a full programme: Apex Expeditions' US$170 boma day from Moshi, which lists the activities, lunch at the boma, all entrance fees, a guide and a driver. The others are a US$80 Ismani day from Arusha, a US$100 Kin Grand half day with steep group discounts, a US$175 Africa Pathways village visit with a bush walk, and two Africa Pathways combinations that add Materuni waterfall and coffee (US$149) or Chemka hot springs (US$120). Here is what each one tells you, what it leaves out, and who it suits.

The Apex boma day from Moshi publishes the fullest programme

Apex Expeditions' Maasai Boma Day in Oldonyo Oibor Emanyata is the tour to book if you want to know in advance what the day holds. Your guide briefs you in Moshi, then you travel to Oldonyo Oibor Emanyata, where the programme runs through the village: the ironsmith, shooting an arrow, beadwork, the history of Maasai houses, a goat slaughter, the history of the Laigwanani and the Moran initiation. Lunch is at the boma, followed by conversation with the clan leaders, and in the late afternoon you are driven back to your hotel or to the airport.

US$170 per person covers lunch, drinking water, an English-speaking guide, a driver, first-aid support, the guided activities and all entrance fees; alcohol, personal items and tips are extra. It needs two people and takes ages 5 and over, so a solo traveller has to find a partner for the day. The goat slaughter is part of the published programme, which matters if you are travelling with children or would rather not watch; ask us whether you can step away from that part. Apex gives a full refund or free rebooking more than 30 days out and half back at 15 to 29 days; ask us for the exact terms inside two weeks, because the published notes conflict.

Cheaper days from Arusha with less detail

Ismani Tours and Safaris' The best 1-day trip to Maasai cultural tour is US$80 per person, bookable for one, and meets in Arusha. The description promises a village and boma visit and nothing more specific, so ask us about lunch, the village and the driving time before you compare it with the Apex day on price alone.

Kin Grand Safari's Half-Day Maasai Experience is US$100 per person for up to 12 people, meeting in Arusha with the pickup point confirmed after booking. The group discounts are the reason to look at it: 20 percent off from two people and 50 percent off from five, so a family of five pays US$50 each. It is the only half-day option here, which suits a morning before an afternoon flight out of Arusha, but the host publishes no inclusions, so ask us what the half day covers.

Africa Pathways Expeditions' Authentic Maasai village & Bush walk is US$175 per person for a full day and adds a guided bush walk to the village visit. The pickup point is confirmed after booking. It is the most expensive day here, and the one-line description does not say what the walk involves or whether lunch is in, so ask us before you pay the premium over the Apex day.

Combine the village with Materuni or Chemka

Africa Pathways runs two combinations for people who want one cultural stop and one outdoor one. Maasai Village, Materuni Waterfalls & Coffee Tour (US$149 per person) pairs the village with the Materuni waterfall walk and a coffee visit near Moshi; the waterfall leg is a real walk, which we describe in our Materuni waterfalls and coffee guide. Maasai Village & Chemka Hot Springs (US$120 per person) pairs it with a swim at the Chemka springs instead. Both start from a pickup point confirmed after booking and both publish nothing on lunch or entrance fees, so ask us. Pick Materuni if you want to walk, Chemka if you want to swim, and the plain village day if you want the afternoon with the community rather than on the road.

What to ask before you book any of them

Because five of the six tours publish no inclusions, the useful comparison is the questions, not the headline prices. Ask us which village the tour visits and how far it is from your hotel; whether the village fee is in the price (Apex includes all entrance fees); whether lunch is included or bought on the way; and how photography is handled, since you should ask people before you photograph them. If a price looks low next to the Apex day, the missing pieces are usually the fee and the lunch.

More on northern Tanzania: Materuni waterfalls and coffee from Moshi, one free day in Arusha before safari, Arusha National Park day trips, Ngorongoro Crater day trips from Arusha and a Kilimanjaro day hike before safari.
