Lake Bunyonyi After Gorilla Trekking: Day Trip or a Night on the Lake

Lake Bunyonyi is 7 km from Kabale town, and you can give it a whole day for US$380 per person or let a gorilla trip include it: a 3-day Bwindi trek from Entebbe with a sunset cruise on the lake costs US$1,290 per person (minimum three guests), a private 4-day trip from Kampala with a lake afternoon and night on day three costs US$2,050 (minimum four), and a 7-day Rwanda and Uganda primate safari from Kigali reaches the lake on day five at US$3,295. Our own hosted Gorilla Trail trip, 9 to 17 February 2027, ends with a canoe afternoon and a farewell dinner at the lake. The day trip from Kabale is the only option here built around the lake itself: a canoe or boat cruise among the islands, ziplining, swimming, birdwatching and a community visit, with lunch, entrance fees and a guide in the price. On the gorilla packages the lake is the rest stop after the trek.

The lake sits on the road out of Bwindi's Ruhija sector

Uganda Wildlife Authority's Bwindi park guide says the Ruhija trailhead can be reached from hotels in Kabale and Lake Bunyonyi, by turning north off the Kampala to Kisoro road 18 km beyond Kabale, and that gorilla registration starts at 07:30, the briefing at 08:00 and tracking at 08:30. So a night at the lake works best before or after a Ruhija trek; for Buhoma, Rushaga or Nkuringo the lake is a transfer away, which is how the packages below use it. UWA's Mgahinga guide describes the lake as the result of volcanic craters blocking the Ruhuma Valley west of Kabale, Africa's second deepest lake, with at least 20 small islands and steep terraced hills around it. The hosts here count 29 islands.

A full day on the lake from Kabale costs US$380

The 1 day Lake Bunyonyi Excursion from Baheka Travel & Safaris starts at your Kabale hotel or lodge after an early breakfast, with the guide arriving 20 minutes before departure, then a 7 km drive through Kabale town to the lake. The day is a canoe or boat cruise around the islands, ziplining, swimming, birdwatching and a community visit, and you are back at your Kabale lodge afterwards. The price includes lunch, drinking water, private transfers between stops, an English-speaking guide, a local host, a driver, all entrance and ticket fees and the guided activities. It is open to ages 7 to 95, with a full refund if you cancel 48 hours ahead and 50% at 24 hours. The host also offers gorilla tracking as an add-on at US$1,750, covering accommodation, vehicle, driver-guide, fuel and the permit; ask us how that fits around the lake day if you want both.

Book this one when you are already in Kabale with a free day, for example after a Ruhija trek. It is the wrong choice as a stand-alone from Kampala, because the drive to Kabale is a day in itself. Pack swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim, and follow the guide's water-safety instructions.

Three days from Entebbe: gorillas, then a sunset cruise

The 3 Days Gorilla Tracking & Lake Bunyonyi trip from African Adventure Travellers is the short version. A driver meets you in the arrivals hall at Entebbe (the host warns that traffic into Kampala can take up to 90 minutes), you drive west with a stop at the Equator, trek to a habituated gorilla family in Bwindi for one hour, then unwind at Lake Bunyonyi with a sunset boat cruise among its islands before returning to Entebbe. A Batwa cultural performance is part of the plan. The price includes full board, drinking water, hotel accommodation in twin-share rooms (a single room on request), airport pickup and drop-off, an English-speaking guide and driver, entrance fees, permits and park fees and first-aid support. Flights, visa, insurance, tips, alcohol, optional activities and extra nights are not.

It needs at least three guests, takes up to eight, and is set up for ages 15 to 75. The host's own fitness note says treks last 1 to 7 hours over hilly, dense forest, and its packing list is long trousers, a waterproof jacket, hiking boots, gardening gloves, insect repellent, sunscreen and two litres of water. On cancellations the host's policy gives a full refund at 48 hours and 50% at 24 hours and says gorilla permits are non-refundable once issued by the Uganda Wildlife Authority; one of its FAQs says "free cancellation up to 24 hours", so get the rule for your booking in writing.

Four days from Kampala gives the lake its own night

The 4-day Uganda gorilla trekking safari from Zenvoy Tours and Travels is private and gives the lake a night rather than a cruise on the way home. Day one is the drive from Kampala to Bwindi with a lunch stop and, time allowing, a stop at the Equator. Day two is the briefing and the trek, with an optional Batwa or community evening. Day three is the drive from Bwindi to Lake Bunyonyi, check-in and lunch, then an optional traditional canoe or motorised boat excursion, or an afternoon at the lodge. Day four is the drive back to Kampala, arriving late afternoon or evening. Full board, water, hotels, airport pickup and drop-off, local transport, an English-speaking guide and driver, permits and park fees, entrance fees, excursions, photos from the day and a welcome pack are in the price; international flights, the Uganda visa, insurance, shopping, drinks and tips are not. Arrive 10 minutes early for pickup.

It needs four guests. Cancellation is on a sliding scale: 90% back 60 or more days before departure, 70% at 30 to 59 days, 50% at 15 to 29, 25% at 7 to 14 and nothing under 7 days, with permit fees subject to the authorities' own rules. Choose this over the 3-day trip if you want to wake up at the lake.

Longer routes that pass through: seven and nine days

The 7-Day Rwanda and Uganda Primate Safari from SilverBird Tours starts in Kigali and runs Nyungwe (canopy walk, chimpanzees, waterfall trail), Lake Kivu, Bwindi gorilla trekking, Lake Bunyonyi on day five, then Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Kazinga Channel, ending in Kigali or Kampala. It costs US$3,295 per person with no minimum group. The inclusions are written as "coordination" of the forest activities, gorilla trekking and cross-border transfers "where confirmed", with a driver-guide, and the exclusions end with "anything not specifically listed as included". That wording leaves permits, lodges and meals open, so ask us for a full written quote before you compare it with the two Uganda-only trips.

Baheka's 9-Day Uganda Itinerary (US$4,620 per person, ages 15 to 70) is the long loop: Kampala, Jinja and rafting on the Nile, Ziwa rhinos and Murchison Falls, Kibale chimpanzees, Queen Elizabeth, then the Bwindi trek on day eight followed by a transfer to Lake Bunyonyi for an evening boat cruise and a night at Bird Nest Resort, and the drive to Entebbe via the Equator on day nine. It publishes lodge names for every night but no inclusions list, so ask us what the price covers before you book.

Our hosted trip in February 2027 ends at the lake

The Gorilla Trail: Rwanda + Uganda is our own nine-day hosted trip, 9 to 17 February 2027, for up to 12 adults aged 18 and over, starting and ending in Kigali. It runs Kigali, golden monkeys in Volcanoes National Park, the Cyanika border crossing, the Bwindi gorilla trek on day six, then a slow transfer to Lake Bunyonyi on day seven for the included guided canoe experience (conditions permitting) and a hosted farewell dinner at the lake, before the drive back to Kigali on day eight. Eight nights' twin-share accommodation, breakfast daily with full board at the remote lodges, one Uganda gorilla permit at your verified UWA category, one golden-monkey permit, the ground transport and border crossings and a Visatile trip host are included; flights to Kigali, visas, insurance, porters and lunch on the border day are not. The permit is priced by citizenship and residency category, so the price depends on your documents.

The Gorilla Trail: Rwanda + Uganda — 9 Days

Some wildlife moments stay with you forever. On this nine-day Rwanda–Uganda adventure, follow golden monkeys through bamboo forest, cross into Uganda’s green highlands and trek with rangers in Bwindi for a regulated mountain-gorilla encounter. Then recover beside Lake Bunyonyi before returning to Kigali. Meet your small Visatile crew in Kigali for a hosted route that blends the city’s history and food with early forest starts, scenic road journeys and unhurried lakeside time. The trip starts and ends in Kigali; international flights are not included in the base price, and return-flight add-ons are available from Lagos, London, selected continental Europe gateways and the US East Coast. Gorilla-permit pricing varies by citizenship and residency category, so each traveler’s price and permit must match their verified Uganda Wildlife Authority category.

Which one to book

  • Already in Kabale with a day spare: the US$380 excursion. It is the only option built around the lake rather than the gorillas.
  • Three of you, short on time: the 3-day trip from Entebbe, US$1,290 each. The lake is a sunset cruise, not a stay.
  • Four of you, and you want a night on the lake: the 4-day private trip from Kampala, US$2,050 each.
  • Travelling alone and happy in a group: our hosted Gorilla Trail in February 2027, which takes solo bookings.
  • Wrong for: anyone under 15 on the gorilla packages (UWA's minimum), under 18 on our hosted trip, and solo travellers on the 3 and 4-day trips, which need three and four guests.

For the trek-day rules, permit prices and the road from Kampala to Bwindi, read Uganda gorilla trekking tours of 3 to 6 days compared. None of the trips here is in that guide.
