Craft Workshops in Kampala: Beading, Candles and Gypsum Décor

Taloso Workshop runs three short craft sessions inside the Dancing Cup restaurant on Luthuli Avenue in Bugolobi, Kampala: beading at US$8.95 per person, candle making at US$12.78 and gypsum décor at US$15.34. Each one is booked on request for your own date, needs no previous experience, and ends with you carrying home what you made: a bead bracelet or necklace, a scented candle, or a painted gypsum tray. The candle session takes children from age 10. If cake appeals more than craft, Cake and Toast Uganda runs a decorating workshop in the city at US$40 per person, from age 8.

All three sessions happen inside Dancing Cup in Bugolobi

Taloso's studio sits inside Dancing Cup, a family and pet friendly restaurant and café in Bugolobi, east of the city centre. The host's own page (Taloso Workshop on Instagram) gives opening hours of 9:00 to 22:00 and lists beading, scented candle making and gypsum as the three things you can do there. The venue's page describes itself as a restaurant that welcomes families and pets, and its directory listing mentions a private compound with parking, play areas inside and out, and craft workshops hosted on site.

One thing to settle before you set off: our listings give the meeting point as 15 Luthuli Avenue, while the venue's own pages and reviews give Plot 71 Luthuli Avenue. Both are on the same road in Bugolobi. Ask us for the pin when you book, or search for Dancing Cup on your map app and look for the restaurant compound.

Beading: make a bracelet or necklace for US$8.95

The beading session is the cheapest of the three and the easiest to fit around a meal. You design and make your own bracelet, necklace or other accessory from colourful beads, shells and other materials, with the Taloso team guiding you, and you take the finished piece home. No experience is needed. There is no published minimum age or time limit, so tell us who is coming and when you want to start.

Candle making: US$12.78, ages 10 and up

In the candle session you learn the basic candle-making process, choose your own colours and scents, and make a candle to take home. The host pitches it at solo guests, friends, families and groups, and sets the minimum age at 10, which makes it the one to book if you have older children in tow. Hot wax is involved, so wear something you do not mind marking.

Gypsum décor: mould and paint a tray for US$15.34

Gypsum is the plaster-like material behind the pastel trays and shells you see in home shops. In this session you mould, shape, paint and finish a decorative piece such as a tray, a shell or another small home accent. All materials are provided and the piece is yours to keep. It is the dearest of the three sessions and the one with the most obvious souvenir value.

Pick beading if you want the cheapest, quickest thing to do between coffee and lunch, and gypsum if you want the souvenir that looks best on a shelf. Candle making is the middle option and the only one with a published age rule. None of the Taloso sessions publishes a running time or a fixed start, and every booking needs the host's approval before it is confirmed, so agree a start time when you request your date rather than turning up and hoping.

Other hands-on classes in Kampala

Cake and Toast Uganda's cake decorating workshop is the other regular beginner class in the city: you practise decorating techniques and finish your own cake, for US$40 per person, with a minimum age of 8. The host confirms the exact Kampala meeting point after booking, so it suits people staying anywhere in town.

If you have a group of six or more and two days to spare, our batik workshop guide covers Modern Batik's two-day class at US$125 per person. Ada Candles and Crafts ran a one-off candle and reed-diffuser class at Emin Pasha Hotel on 9 October 2026; our write-up is still the place to check whether a new date has been added.

Booking and the day itself

Request the date you want on the listing. The host approves it before the booking is confirmed, so book a few days ahead rather than on the morning. Meet at Dancing Cup on Luthuli Avenue, Bugolobi; the restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, so most people pair a session with a meal there. Prices are set in US dollars; our money in Kampala guide covers dollars, shillings and mobile money. Gypsum means paint and candle making means wax, so leave the good shirt at the hotel.
