A Mount Meru climb costs US$682 to US$1,200 per person for the three- and four-day treks we run, and US$2,100 for a five-day version. Book four days unless you are already acclimatised: Tanzania National Parks says the summit takes three to four days and recommends four to avoid altitude sickness. Here is how the seven climbs compare, what the park rules say about rangers, huts and children, and what to check before you pay, because none of the hosts publishes an inclusions list.
Four days is what the park recommends
Meru stands at 4,566 m in Arusha National Park, according to TANAPA's park page, which describes it as Tanzania's second-highest peak and a climb through forest, alpine meadow and volcanic ash cones. The park brochure sets out the four-day pattern: the first night at the Miriakamba accommodation centre at 2,500 m, the second night at the Saddle, the third night back at Miriakamba, then down to the exit gate on day four. A three-day climb uses the same two huts with one night fewer, which is why TANAPA's own website describes Meru hiking as a two-night, three-day adventure using the Miriakamba and Saddle huts, arranged at Momella Gate with porters and an armed ranger escort.
The park also uses Meru as an acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro, and Ismani Tours sells its three-day trek on that basis. If that is your plan, read our Kilimanjaro routes and prices guide alongside this one.

| 5-Day Big Time Mount Meru Trekking (Big Time Adventures) | 5 | US$2,100 | Arusha | None, ask us |
None of the seven publishes what the price covers. On this mountain that matters more than usual, because the park charges a conservation fee, hut fees per person per night, a ranger fee per climbing group and crew fees for guides and porters on top of each other. Before you pay, ask us to confirm with the host which of these are inside the price, whether meals on the mountain are included, and how many porters and guides come with a group of your size.
Three-day climbs from US$682
Apex Expeditions' 3 Days Mount Meru is the lowest price here at US$682 per person and meets in Moshi. Apex describes the climb as moving through rainforest and alpine zones with an experienced mountain team to views of Kilimanjaro and the plains. It is the right choice if you have already spent nights at altitude, and the wrong one if Meru is your first big mountain, because three days leaves no spare night for acclimatisation.

Four-day climbs from US$842
Apex Expeditions' 4 Days Mount Meru adds the park's recommended extra night for US$842 per person, US$160 more than the same host's three-day climb. It also meets in Moshi. For most first-time climbers this is the one to book.

Serengeti Wildlife Safaris' Mount Meru 4-Day Climbing is US$1,200 per person, again meeting at Kilimanjaro International Airport arrivals, with no published reason for the higher price, so ask us what it adds before choosing it over the others.

View experienceEvery climbing group goes with an armed ranger
TANAPA's rules for the park are short and worth reading before you book. Every climbing group must be led by an armed park ranger or guide, you go as a group rather than ascending or descending alone, and children under 10 are not allowed above 3,700 m, which rules out the summit for them. A porter may carry a maximum of 20 kg. Nobody may be inside the park between 6.30pm and 6.30am except at a campsite, lodge, rest house or other designated place, which on the mountain means the huts.

The huts are real buildings, not tents. The brochure lists Miriakamba with 96 beds and Saddle with 112, both with flush or pit toilets and showers, and says booking park-owned facilities is mandatory. Park entry for international visitors is US$70 per adult and US$20 per child, with East African residents paying TZS 20,000, per the park page; TANAPA's tariff rules add that children under 5 enter free, child rates run from 5 to 15, fees include 18 percent VAT where applicable and a conservation fee is valid for 24 hours from entry. The brochure lists the ranger, hut and crew charges separately, so a climb price that only covers entry leaves a lot unpaid. The park is about 32 km from Arusha town and 40 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
June to September and December to early March are the park's best months
TANAPA says the park can be visited all year, with the best time from June to September and from December to early March. The short rains fall in October and November and the long rains from March to May. All seven climbs are sold on demand rather than on fixed dates, so you choose the window; ask us how each host handles a wet forecast on summit night.

Good to know
US$682 to US$900 per person for a three-day climb, US$842 to US$1,200 for four days and US$2,100 for a five-day trek, across the seven climbs we run. None publishes its inclusions, so we confirm park, hut, ranger and crew fees with the host before you pay.
Four, unless you are already acclimatised. TANAPA says the summit takes three to four days and recommends four, with nights at Miriakamba, the Saddle and Miriakamba again.
4,566 m, according to Tanzania National Parks, which calls it Tanzania's second-highest peak.
Yes. TANAPA's park rules say every climbing group must be led by an armed park ranger or guide, and the climb is arranged at Momella Gate with porters.
Not to the top. The park rules keep children under 10 below 3,700 m, so a summit climb is for older children and adults.
TANAPA names June to September and December to early March as the best months. The short rains are in October and November and the long rains from March to May.
